Stacey Jackson on Snoop Dogg Collab, ‘Live It Up’

hi I’m Rebecca Braden and welcome to
watchmojo.com our host Malik got the
chance to sit down with Stacey Jackson
to talk about her album live it up and
her collaboration with Snoop Dogg so
tell us how you got into his music game
well I was always always singing I mean
from you know Tom I was teeny weeny when
I was in Montreal i was in a hard rock
band growing up when I was you know in
the 80s the big hair bandana and then
moved to New York and even while I was
working you know had a good day job I
still had a band and I joined a Motown
band called fuzzy dice it’s like
exercising you know like you don’t want
to not trained it you know like so I
love to sing I always wanted to record
an album and so after I had four kids I
was like I gotta I gotta do this so
that’s how it all started
so tell us that’s interesting story now
about recording your first album tell us
about that whole process sure it was an
album for for charity called music for
youth and the album was called upside
down and it was basically Motown meet
meets rock I went to some of the
festivals and I saw some of these kids
and they were unbelievable I mean I’m
talking super talented from choirs two
strings today and so I brought a whole
bunch of them about 30 or 40 down from
all over the UK to London and into the
studio and sprinkle them throughout the
album there was a DJ who would you know
obviously music for youth is a big
charity in the UK and he had an
affiliation with he was younger and said
you know let’s let’s remix one of the
tracks which one is going to be your
single off the album like single off the
album so fast forward and they’re all
the settings after the remix one of my
songs ends up like between Lady Gaga and
Lissa’s or sisters at number 9 on the
pop charts
No
and you have an album coming soon I live
it up right yeah yeah the album comes
out at the end of the year I wanted to
release like I am a woman which was the
first single back in the UK largely just
to see whether or not this one thing
wasn’t like an accident you know and
that went to number five
obviously that I had something there and
then live it up was was born and I live
it up you have featuring a Snooper the
title of the album was also the title of
the song that future Snoop Dogg now
digitally you can send stuff over back
forth that for he’s like I want to meet
her get her on a plane i’m flying to
boston because he was like on tour i had
to meet him there spent a couple days I
mean went to a show backstage the whole
thing we boasted radio drops for Boston
radio local radio stations and then I
mean then we recorded the next day I
mean the whole thing was just complete I
couldn’t believe this was happening I
want to make you make you wait you never
be what’s the vibe what’s the energy on
the album my message for this album is
basically living your dream
no matter what you do no matter who you
are how old you are if you have a dream
if you have a desire view to the passion
you know you have to really live it and
go for it and I hope that Isis it i’m
sending that message at least for me
immediately to my own family to my own
kids and the people around
no one any singles osmose clone is this
low right yeah and I was covered by
whitesnake yeah okay so why do you side
to do the cover I was a big white snake
back
I wanted to put my interpretation on a
classic that I had a connection to I
don’t know whether or not David
Coverdale is gonna be happy that I’ve
covered you know his track in that way I
mean but that’s my interpretation of his
song I do hope he’s liking what i’m
doing i think the people are liking it
the people are dancing to it the crowd
the DJ’s are playing it it’s just got to
number two in the UK this week
now I know the UK producers and DJs is a
big thing in UK yay I mean what’s the
major difference between the UK market
and the North American market completely
different and you know you can’t be too
much of a prima donna about your work I
mean it’s a good segue because we’re
just talking about Whitesnake and me
interpreting their track I mean I write
music and I have to be able to have a
head on my shoulders to be like okay
this version that I’ve done might not be
right for this club or that radio
station how can I make it work so you
get on board djs from various different
kinds of you know house dubstep Drum &
Bass you’ve got to be smart about where
you’re putting out your music and what
you’re doing with your music and you
know what works in abita might not work
in Chicago what works in Montreal might
not work in London like you know I’m
talking working meaning getting spun on
the radios and getting played and
getting played in the club so you have
to just be have to be open to to working
with variation of people
