he was one of the fathers of Canadian
Confederation that took place on July
1st 1867 hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’re
speaking with Richard Gwyn about Sir
John a McDonald what was the most
fascinating interesting surprising thing
that you learned about Sir John a in
your research Johnny McDonald was the
first national leader in the world to
try a Democrat Dementors to try to
extend the vote to women he said women
have been oppressed for centuries he
said they are going to get we should
give him the vote because we could be
the first in the world and they’re going
to get the vote anyway eventually this
is an 85 that was a third of a century
before women in Canada got the vote
illegally after the first world war that
was so far advanced there was scarcely a
suffragette movement in England let
alone in Canada there was one in the
state susan b anthony was the leader of
it but he was so far ahead
nope it has any idea that this man we
think I was this clever skillful
charming politician devious nor mr.
could think that far ahead but he was he
was definitely half a century ahead of
everybody
tell us about Sir John a his personality
he was charming he was clever he was
funny he was really the only funny Prime
Minister we’ve ever had I mean a Pierre
Trudeau could be very clever and very
witty but there was a sharpness it was
always an engineer it was sense of truth
he was out to prove he was the smartest
person in the room but God was very
smart indeed but he didn’t have that
feeling that mean he spoke in a
conversational style he didn’t good
grand pompous rhetoric he had a very
shrewd understanding of the importance
of being different from everybody else
he attracted tension himself really one
thing so simple to us but it made him
stand out then he shaved he was
clean-shaven
all men then in public life had big
bushy beards there’s a famous photograph
of all the delegates to the
Charlottetown conference which started
the older generation and they’re all
that was a beard or hear a pompous
MacDonald is
still even rise there and you just turn
your eyes to him because he’s different
what did he manage to accomplish well
they managed to accomplish the only
thing that really mattered which was to
make sure that Karen did not become part
of America there’s no doubt whatever in
my mind that but from McDonald we
wouldn’t have lost in 67 try 167 at that
time just about every person in Britain
who knew something about Gamma and they
weren’t hostile kin and every person in
the state who knew Sonny buck and wasn’t
hostile again took for granted we
wouldn’t last very long all the laws of
geography Commerce transportation
culture all the things Commerce and Men
as everything was north-south so we
would join the United States claims
didn’t want there and secondly Johnny
McDonald who was an exceptional
exceptional politician skilled devious
guileful
he was bonded to him we didn’t do that
and he but you keep how would Sir John a
view Canada today we’re very pleased
because what he wanted this happened
I mean Canadians are no longer scared in
the United States or or by the night
since we know it’s amazing country it’s
much more powerful course all the rest
with that’s all of this but Canadians
have a sense now of contentment in their
own country in the sense that we’ve
accomplished something we are a
different country we’re not gonna become
American MacDonald obviously would be
amazed by planes and skyscrapers and all
that stuff but he would say my can is
not getting badly thank you very much
thank you very much I enjoyed it
