while he’s acted in such big budget
films as k-pax it’s his smaller projects
that are closest to his heart yo son as
in so lost simply because we are we be
the rising stars and Suns that never
sent word up jack hi I’m Rebecca Braden
and welcome to watchmojo.com and today
our host Malik Shaheed got the chance to
speak with actor poet and musician Saul
Williams about his film career and his
literary mixtape talk to us about your
love of poetry I wrote poems and write
poems out of out of necessity or some
it’s a discipline that I kind of enjoy
from my own development as a person I’m
write down thoughts and journals I like
journals I have a love of books of
journals you know fill them up with
words cuz they’re there and it’s and I
think it’s helpful sometimes when I’m
thinking or what have you poetry’s been
very useful for me but I didn’t approach
it out of a love of it talk to us a lot
about your literary mixing so I have a
book that’s coming out on September
forth with approximately a hundred
different poets in it kind of like an
anthology except the way that it’s been
put together is the the titles and the
authors go in the back of the broken
like film credits and the poems are
connected one after another so that they
read like one voice but it’s 100 voices
and they’re connected by theme and then
I wrote a poem using the the poems that
are there and reading over it just using
those words here that goes through the
whole book as well and and so that’s
called chorus you’re acting a phone call
Oh she’ll jury which is a French film
and you had to speak french in the film
yeah how big a challenge was that for
you well it was a big challenge i was
living in paris at the time when i was
asked to do it we shot the film in
senegal for two months over the summer
last summer and the language was part of
the challenge i mean the other challenge
was approaching the subject matter to
the last 24 hours in the life of a man
who knows that he’s going to die at the
end of the day when he goes to sleep and
so
his what he does on those last 24 hours
from the moment he opens his eyes to the
moment he closes them and and so I was
playing that character and so that was
that was more of a challenge in the
language the language was not as
difficult because when I was in the
process of learning the language i also
had a wall off coach as well and that
was that was fun more so than anything
else and but also because the language
that i had to learn was in the script it
was like learning lines i didn’t have to
learn how to speak the language fluently
i could just learn my lines so the first
time you Dibble and dabble in a film you
wrote a film called slam which won the
Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance I stand
on the corner of the Block slinging
amethyst rocks drinking 40s a mother’s
private neck to stop dodging cops cuz 50
beaver 666 and I need a fixer that
Purple Rain slam is the film that I did
right when I got out of grad school the
first film I ever did and I was asked to
write it before I was asked to act in it
and so I agreed to be a writer and then
you know begged apt cuz i was in school
for acting I didn’t know anything about
writing but the director thought I did
because he had heard my poetry I was
asked also dry poetry for the film and
it was right as I was discovering poetry
the poetry had already transformed my
life by that time and then the film
itself you know blew that out into
another dimension thanks a lot all right
thank you maybe should you okay
you
