Richard Branson on Green Technology

well I properly believe that the
companies like ours have a duty to not
only develop the most energy and
environmentally efficient futures for
our existing businesses but also to
invest in the future sources of
renewable energy and fuel
many of you may know that I’ve been like
vocal over the last three years on the
issue of climate change I truly believe
that it will be through innovative and
entrepreneurial ideas across politics
industry science but real strides
forward we made for tackling one of the
greatest if not perhaps the greatest
threat the world faces today we have
already invested more than 250 million
in companies in renewable energy and
resource efficiency as well as research
and development into the next generation
of transportation fuels and we have
investments in businesses ranging from
ethanol plants in the u.s. to the makers
of industrial lighting and flexible
solar cells while we’re looking at every
future transport technology and the
fuels of the future to feed these
technologies in February 2008 we flew
one of our 747 s using partly biofuels
from London and stem and we’ve already
tested our trains using biodiesel fuels
a couple of years ago we had the chance
to team up with my friend Steve Austin
to build a revolutionary aircraft the
Virgin Atlantic local flyer it wasn’t
made of metal but instead it used carbon
composite materials and it was
incredibly light capable of operating
safely very high altitudes to improve
fuel efficiency dramatically the plane
is now in the Smithsonian Museum at
Dulles Airport in Washington but before
it went there Steve successfully flew
around the world on less fuel per hour
than a four by four SUV uses every day
taking the kids to school
