Ray Anderson: Mount Sustainability

sustainability is a buzzword in business
today but it wasn’t always rain Anderson
and his company interface helped pioneer
the idea of green business hi I’m
Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
with Anderson about the journey to a
sustainable company can you explain to
us how you managed to green up a petrol
intensive company like a carpet making
company like you do it took us a couple
years to figure out there’s this
mountain
and we realized that other seven phases
of the man and today we’d say they’re
eight phases and we’re still looking for
the nine at the time we identified the
seven phases of the mat and said we
gotta climb each of those phases to its
own peak and we’ll meet at the top and
that point at the top will represent
sustainability take nothing do no harm
and the first phase of the mountain is
eliminate waste any cost that we incur
that does not add value to our customers
is my definition of waste today we would
say any fossil fuel energy is by
definition waste the second face of the
mountains and one of the emissions to be
sure that whatever we emit from our
factories is harmless today to the
environment and that means working with
our suppliers upstream because what
comes into our factors will go out
either its product or a solid waste or
liquid effluent and gaseous emissions
the third face of the mountain is energy
we want to operate our factories on
renewable energy today we’re a fourth of
the way they are the fourth face of the
mountain it is material flows we want to
get our products back at the end of
their first life and give them life
after life the fifth face to match the
transportation face moving people and
products and their climate neutral
resource efficient harmless we’re quite
well along the way on that with people
we have a way to go yet with product
though the six phases amount is making
the most important because nothing of
lasting value happens without it that is
the culture shift it’s one mind at a
time adopting this new paradigm this new
way of thinking about the world in the
industrial system and our place within
that industrial assessment and then the
seventh face the mountain we’d really
think that someday we’ll be able to
reinvent the way we go to mark
instead of selling products stuff will
sell the service that the product
delivers to the customer for carpet
sister : the texture the design the
ambiance our comfort underfoot the
acoustical value all the reasons anybody
would want on carpet in the first place
just sell them the service and retain
ownership in the stuff the means of
delivering the service the eighth face
of the mountain has just emerged more
clearly for us and then it’s a social
equity face of the mountain we have a
long way to go to figure that place of
the mountain out and I can begin to tell
you how far we are up that particular
place because it’s a whole different set
of metrics we in fact invented all new
field of metrics called eco metrics you
know this is just as important on the
environmental initiative as the
financial metrics are on the financial
side of the business and now we have the
socio metrics to figure out that the
social equity side of this
