hi again this is chris with
watchmojo.com today we’ll be doing is
one of my favorite things playing games
and with that will come a game review
today i’ll be reviewing gears of war now
the incredible Gears of War was released
for the xbox 360 a few months ago and
has really got a lot of attention for
itself so we’ll be focusing on some of
the visuals some of the gameplay
elements and the audio I’m really just
the overall feeling and expectations you
can set up now I know a lot of you
played this game already but for the
four of you who haven’t I’m going to try
to give you a sense of what you can
expect when you get into the meat of
this game now what good is a game if you
don’t like looking at it let’s have a
look at the graphics of years of war now
Gears of War runs off the unreal 3
engine and that engine is designed by
the team of epic epics the company the
brawl you unreal tournament and unreal 3
and they basically ported the engine
they’re gonna be using for their next
generation on real games and brought
that over to the xbox 360 for years of
war now because the xbox 360 is pretty
much a dream for designers to program
for you’re able to basically plug that
engine right into the system and with
some minor tweaking get it to run really
really really smoothly so you’re looking
at here is an in-game cinematics
sequence that’s produced using all of
the game’s engine so none of this is
pre-rendered video which is something
that I think it’s about time we get rid
of now with next-generation games and I
think that epic sort of sees it that way
to one of the things you’ll notice is
just some of the incredible effects here
I mean you’ve got everything who’s
specular lighting on this helicopter
with the sort of metallic luster and and
and just some of the the effects you see
here with a smoke and just just the high
dynamic range lighting and just really
looking at the way light reflects off of
a lot of these services and textures
they went through a lot of trouble
rendering the skin textures as well and
what good is that without a high polygon
count as you see here is this building
shatters I mean not only are they
layering some effects here but we’re
just talking about straight up high
polygon counts so they found a really
nice physics engine together I mean
that’s what the Unreal Engine is known
for doing very well but it’s really the
combination of using that engine in
terms of gameplay the physics that it
produces the sort of the next generation
special effects it produces and I think
really importantly getting across a
cinematic
the one thing that the game is also
known for is the roadie cam which is the
camera system they use when you’re
running and that just sort of gives you
a CNN feeling and even this sequence
here does sort of give you the sense
that you’re really watching a battle
unfold they sort of followed a lot of
the cues you seem very popular Hollywood
movies from using some of the
slow-motion here to sort of get across
the drama on the slow down audio but
really also the camera perspectives the
shaking when an explosion happens and
just the sort of tempo and feel and
pacing of scenes so the cinematic value
i think is it really is tied to the
graphics because what good are really
really nice graphics if they don’t
animate beautifully and aren’t presented
beautifully through incredible
cinematics
