Photos That Defined 2007

hi I’m Veronica with watchmojo.com into
the event an event that features
thought-provoking photographs that mark
the year 2007 so we here at the world
press photo exhibit which is the biggest
photo exhibit internationally can you
tell us a little bit more about that
every year from October on photographers
from all over the world will send in
their pics to the world press and the
end of January we invite 13 experts out
of the world of photography
photographers himself but also curators
or editors for example we invite in
terms to them to comment judge the
pictures this year there were 80
thousand pictures just a little over
submitted by 5,000 photographers from
around 125 countries with over 80,000
photos coming in how do you select which
ones are featured in the exhibit half of
the jury comes in in the first week what
they do is look at all the 80,000 images
in a dazzling tempo which just goes
click click click click whatever they
see something they like that you shout
in then we know the pictures in and it
goes to the next round and then the
second part of the jury comes in they
have one day together so they discuss
what they’ve seen and the end of the day
the second round people take over and
they go through every category again and
after all the winners are chosen so ten
categories six prizes for category each
category gets one picture chosen those
stand together we pick the world press
photo of the year what’s the story
behind this photograph behind us the
theme for this year is if I would give
this exhibition of teammates it’s more
than meets the eye and this picture
represents that very well a lot of
people see this picture and think wow
this is the guys they killed a gorilla
and now they carry a towel to read it or
whatever completely not the case these
guys are Mountaineers they are in Congo
in an area where there’s a conflict
between a rebel army and the
government’s army the guys who work in
that area are underpaid are being shot
at
and still try to protect the gorillas
that live there and these guys with the
photographer went in the forest and
found the fair found the gorillas all
debts they decided to take these
gorillas the father figure take him make
a stretcher and carry him out for three
days out of the words to give him a to
bury him the winning photograph is of a
soldier in Afghanistan he tell us a
little bit more about that the area
where this takes place is the Korengal
Valley last year it was one of the most
violent places on earth every day there
was fire contact between Taliban
fighters and UN fighters the
photographer Spindler maybe five six
seven times already so he really knows
these guys well he doesn’t try to be
objective he’s as subjective as he can
showing the world what these guys go
through that the picture is not
perfectly sharp as you can see but the
metaphor in this picture is so strong
that the technical sharpens is not that
important anymore that was one of the
reasons why this was chosen world press
photo of the year
