Hotel Rwanda is the 2004 film which
tells the story of one man’s courageous
actions during the 1994 Rwandan genocide
hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com I got to speak with the
man behind the story Paul Rusesabagina
if you could just give us a bit of
background as to what you went through
in Rwanda 15 years ago I found myself in
a mess in that total mess when on April
7th 1994 that one in Jennison broken
after the murder two presidents on the
6th in the evening at the time what
caused you to do what you did
1268 people at least who were staying in
my hotel each and everybody looking at
me without it would without shelter
without a water without even electricity
you do not sit down and think that you
are going to do something what you do is
to open for the first person who comes
in and the second we follow the third
one we follow and you find yourself
within the situation whereby you can
take another decision your conscience
tells you that this is the right thing
to be done I have only one room
what significance did the film Hotel
Rwanda have well hotel Wanda laid one of
the biggest roles in raising awareness I
went back in 2003 with the filmmakers
with a film crew who wanted to make sure
that the story they were going to bring
to the big screen was a true story
what is ruined alike now people are even
today being arrested and killed
immediately before they are taken to any
custody Wanda has changed dancers but
never changed the music for the music
was killing it is still killing but the
killers have changed from one come to
the other one what would you say the
perception is of Rwanda around the world
when we talk about something like a
genocide you take it as something that
found itself in a place like Rwanda when
a given time in a given place and is
perceived as a finished case what can
the average citizen do will you listen
to your own conscience to your own
advisor the only one who does never
confuse right to wrong we need you we
need them we need everybody to put in
his own help thank you very much you’re
welcome
