today we’re hanging out with Miss Nelly
Furtado how are you today I’m great
succeed you looking great thank you it
was a secret
greatness oh great hair and makeup team
I don’t think so no natural I said well
you knew Harlem the spirit
indestructible why that title well you
know I wrote the song spirit an
indestructible and it was like I
couldn’t think of a better title I just
thought wow this powerful and I was
reading this book and I saw that there’s
three words the spirit indestructible in
reference to how we all have that within
us and the words jumped out of me on the
page and I thought wow that’s a hot oven
title and then I wrote the song that
went with the album title so sometimes
album titles are weird like that they
kind of come even before you’ve written
song
you know how to chance listen to the for
single release was in a very different
style how would you describe the energy
of your house the energy is spiritual on
this album you know my first album was
like more in the brain the second album
was in the heart
the third was in the body and his fourth
English record is all about the spirit
it’s all about this adrenaline and this
youthful kind of joy
the album oiz almost for me feels like a
hallelujah because I was in a really
elated kind of place when I wrote it I
just got back from my first trip to
Kenya in Africa with Freda children I
just had met all these people that
inspired me so much and that’s why that
vibration is on and on your song big
hoops
you mentioned the boy going to feel my
poison what did he do to you it’s from
Bimini poison all this all the lyrics
are references to my favorite early
nineties songs so I’m gonna quiz you
okay you hear any other songs in there
yeah during the course I heard two other
things you said in the what I forgot
what he was with salt and pepper
reference the rump shaker you got my
rump rump shakin
that was my playful way of paying
tribute to this time in my life about 14
for my friends and I only listened to
R&B in hip-hop because he grew up in
Victoria which is a bit south of the
border so he picked up all the Seattle
stations and all the West Coast rap
so you had two different versions of the
video also I wanted the the b1 to come
out first I wanted that to be like the
street cut but you know I’m I want a
major label so sometimes things don’t
always come out in the order you want
them to so that so the big fancy video
came out first which I really love too
because it features my friends doing
their Native American hoop dancing which
I think makes it video special but then
the street video is fun too because we
just kind of did it like off the cuff
and we just had a good time and I think
this song has a grit to it that I wanted
a visual interpretation of as well
