Motion City Soundtrack’s Justin Talks Dance Moves, Debut Album

this pop-punk fan shuns the eyeliner and
skinny jeans their genre is known for
but isn’t afraid of a little
choreographed dancing hi i’m rebecca
Brina welcome to watchmojo.com and today
we’re going back to the beginning with
motion city soundtrack
the signs on this
my name is Justin Pierre I sing and play
guitar in the band Motion City
Soundtrack and for one year I was a
Larkin dancer I’m sorry I don’t know
what that is yeah I don’t know that many
people would unless you’re from
Minnesota or you watched Star Search in
the 80s one summer I forgot like a
friend of mine must have been in fifth
grade or something is like yo we got to
do this thing check it out there’s one
guy for every ten girls in this class
and you like do these dances and
everything that’s totally cool and so I
signed up and I did it for a summer and
it was awesome and then and then I was
like ma ma mom sign me up again and she
did but she put me in a class with all
all guys and I was the worst dancer
there so i was i was like fifth row all
the way to the left behind the curtain
so that was the beginning and end of my
dancing career he never made it to star
shirt nope
the question
listening to the stuff off the debut now
what does it mean to you I listen to
what I need to remember something like
if I got to remember apart or I forget
words and I gotta study up that first
record was really weird cuz we only had
a certain amount of money and we
recorded the whole thing in like ten
days minus three songs that are on the
record and then we sold it ourselves and
then we ended up signing to epitaph we
replaced our bass player then we went in
for like two weeks just to like fix
things up due to the fact that we didn’t
have a lot of time a lot of the singing
is like you know off-key and just like
bad and and but it kind of worked it’s
just very raw sounding record so I don’t
know that we could recreate that you
know sort of through limitations
something happened
Oh
you’d use the majority of the the lyric
writing annexed yet now a lot of them
are fairly personal I mean does it ever
get difficult to share like that I know
on even if it kills me there was a
phrase we’re like it was just one of the
dumbest dumbest most cliched phrases
ever but it had to be in there for the
next phrase because I thought that would
be a really kicker to the joke the
phrase was I had a pocketful of dreams
which is like the dumbest thing you
could ever say but then it said but I
gave them all to you now I think I want
them back which I thought was hilarious
so therefore I had to say that first
part that was really dumb in order to
get to that part which to me was the
joke it’s just difficult to find lyrics
that I’m happy with I spend a lot of
time sometimes I’ll spend a year on a
song and it’s still not right and I just
have to report it was the best things I
have at the time other times the words
come out like I think it was like worker
bee was written in like you know just
like within a few minutes the whole song
was done the weekends was a song where I
had one really great verse and I could
not write a second verse so then I ended
up splitting up that first verse in half
and putting half of that first verse in
the second verse and then writing and
then I and then it kind of works am i
okay this works so some sometimes songs
take take a year and sometimes they come
in an instant
random the last question is kind of to
bring it full circle back to the
beginning where you said you used to
take dance lessons do you remember the
choreographed dance to her words
destroyed my planet nope nope actually
don’t they send abilities
if we don’t
we learned that we spent two hours the
night before we shot that video learning
it I mean you can kind of tell we’re
pretty awful at it I think they used the
only takes where we actually got it
right in those moments they had to kind
of edit around us oh thank you very much
thanks for having me
