Mohombi On Growing Up in Congo and Sweden

hey hey Doris Malik Shahid for
watchmojo.com
today we’re hanging out with my homey
who gets deep and personal about who he
is
first of all mohombi what does that name
you know where does it come from
the name means chief actually I got it
from my grand dad who is was Congolese
some that’s where the roots is from
Congo my dad is from Congo and my mom is
Swedish
so yeah I’m a natural Viking how was it
growing up in the Congo and growing up
in Sweden talk about both of those
worlds it’s really black and white up
and down you know that’s the beauty
about things like I consider myself
being lucky to be able to have both
cultures and be 100% bicultural you know
I can go to Congo smelting be a
Congolese 100% as soon as I start
speaking Lingala people same thing in
Sweden I’ve had the privilege of knowing
get to know them both my cultures
equally
the main reason why I moved to Sweeney
was for not only because we had to
escape the war like literally escape
from bombs and shoot you know gun fires
but also for my studies so I went to
Sweden to study finish my studies and
evolve my music career you know getting
getting the music business and yeah a
lot of doors opened up when I moved to
Sweden you’re a singer you’re a
songwriter you’re a dancer you’re an
artist plus what you like about each of
those things what do you like about song
way
Wow what I like about songwriting is the
fact that I can express myself have so
many songs and melodies in my head I
grew up in a big family 15 brothers and
sisters all of them had their idols and
their tastes of music so I grew up with
all of like a melting pot of all those
different music styles which gave me a
lot of inspiration and a lot of tones in
my head all the time so I need to write
if I don’t write I can’t sleep
tell us we like about dancing are you a
great dancer dance for me is a language
I
I consider myself singing as good as I
dance because I started both at the same
time and I just continue doing it since
I was like five years old
I grew up like dancing how freakin dance
I Congolese danced and grew up with
Michael Jackson’s moves so what I try to
do now is just be myself a mix of
everything mix up this African and the
urban street dance
I’ve never taken in the dancers you know
no I let’s say I love to party because
that’s I learn how to dance in the clubs
that’s that’s my that’s my rehearsal
talk about partying I heard out your
live shows it’s like a party it is it is
actually on stage is where I get to live
all those elements that I do have
songwriting producing dancing singing I
get to do all of it at the same time
because I improvise a lot on stage and
stuff so it’s a big party when on that
stage I think wow man do you think I’m
calm now you just see me on stage
