Michael Jackson: Unmasked by Ian Halperin

Michael Jackson was the subject of
gossip throughout his career and even
after his death hi I’m Rebecca Brayton
and welcome to watchmojo.com and today
we’re speaking with author Ian Halperin
who will be demystifying some of the
many rumors spread about the king of pop
about his concerts at the o2 arena I
read that he was either never going to
finish them or they would never happen
can you elaborate on the day Michael
announced he’s coming back I told the
world I said look I’m not even booking
my plane tickets he’s in no shape to
perform at the time it was ten concerts
and then 50 he should be in a hospital
getting the right medical attention and
I I think he’d still be alive
I came out with claims in December 2008
I said he had six months to live I was
right unfortunately but it was meant to
be more of a wake-up call for people to
wake up and get him off this kick of a
comeback and get him in a hospital with
the proper physical and mental health
you said that you had dressed as his
hairdresser and by that you must have
been privy to some information about his
physical appearance
what can you can you say to set the
record straight there Michael had
between 20 and 30 plastic surgeries his
hair was not as natural a head of hair
we started having excessive plastic
surgery after his scalp was burned in at
83 he kept having plastic surgeries that
went wrong it went totally out of
control he lost focus of his physical
appearance and he also has an ailment a
lung ailment you know the thing I
noticed about Michael when I met him his
hands the skin was peeling off than he
had been incredibly large ends for such
a small person it appeared that it was
peeling from the hand on up under his
shirt you even reported that he was no
longer able to sing because of a genetic
condition the genetic lung condition was
called alpha-1 what the media failed to
report was what the second part of the
sentence that I said that he could live
with the alpha-1 it’s potentially fatal
but he could live with it to be a
hundred and ten years old it did affect
his voice in the last three days of his
life he complained that his lungs were
hurting him he said he had both
laryngitis and his lungs
hurting it clearly even after that video
was released of him performing I had his
choreographer examine it
I had AIDS of they said this was not the
Michael Jackson he was sluggish he was
out of sync with the rest of the dancers
and something was wrong and ironically
that night after the video was shot
Michael said he couldn’t do the concerts
he did not feel up to doing 50 shows and
he was livid that he had to do that many
what led you to the conclusion that he
was gay the gay parts is only about two
pages in the book if I’m not mistaken
and it was other people saying it now
what I have since learned that will be
in the updated edition of the book or
the paperback edition is that the reason
that Michael told me this himself but
it’s I’ve learned a lot more the reason
why he didn’t want to come out is
because he feared being vilified as an
african-american pronouncing that he’s
homosexual and he alluded to a lot of
other african-americans who are gay and
could never come out of the closet now I
was skeptical when I first heard that
but recently I read this book called
hugging in hip hop it’s by a writer
named Terrence Dean and in his book he
gives details of all these hip hop stars
who are African American who can’t come
out of the closet because it would be
career suicide very similar to Michael
Jackson alright also in the book leave
the door open that he might be asexual
he was definitely not into women what
was the most shocking thing you learned
in all your research well the most
shocking thing is that Michael kept
working on music until the day he died
there were about 30 or 40 poems hanging
in his bedroom new ideas for music he
never stopped creating he was a real
artist and I learned that when I first
met him because he was talking about
artists like Michelangelo
like Leonardo da Vinci Louis Armstrong
Little Richard he knew everything he
could talk about modern dance and that
was the type of curiosity
and it never left him until the day he
died thank you very much bill thank you
