like a fine wine these guys just keep
getting better
hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
with Braun dealer of mastodont about
their album the hunters
you guys at least the hunter just wanted
to know what you guys were going for on
that album and kind of the concept we
all kind of agreed after the Allison
chains Deftones tour that we were going
to take a break take a breather been on
to over ten years then like a month
later after we got off that tour
everyone started to get itchy and want
to go in and write music so so that
whole year thing didn’t really work out
it’s not really what we wanted to do is
was the fatigue of the road talking
this was one of your few non-concept
albums
why did you guys make that choice this
time I drew up the whole concept for it
and then everyone was like do we have to
do another concept work and I was like
no we don’t I mean I just thought that
that’s what was expected of me
I worked really hard on it and I did put
something together that I thought was
really cool
and it but then when I told everyone
about it you know they were like wow
it’s crazy you know I think Brent was
kind of like do we have to do that you
know and I was like no we don’t do that
at all which like was very freeing and
just opened up a whole new realm of
possibilities where you know we could
sing about you know having sex with
Barbarella on space or something
something like that or methods and
running around with chainsaws in the
Pacific Northwest
well I guess we should talk about that
song why don’t you tell us a bit about
the concept for that song and the video
well I was written in about 15 minutes
15 20 minutes you know brent was like
tune is guitar heard the riff and
started playing along and lo and behold
you know 15 20 minutes later it was it
was pretty much the way it is on the
record except for a I think we came up
with the bridge while we were in the
studio
Carl Berle and fit in the chorus just
started kind of singing it over top of
it and it sounded right I always wanted
to use this as I had heard it I heard a
guy on that’s what intervention talking
about it curls Berle his whole life was
is very fascinating to me like being a
logger in the Pacific Northwest and just
being addicted unfortunately addicted to
methamphetamines and going and cutting
down these trees to get their Burl’s to
go sell them the furniture makers it was
something I had never thought of before
or seen you know so it’s just the
intriguing addiction and out there in
the woods like on meth looks like I
think it makes you feel like you’re Paul
Bunyan which explains kind of like
concept behind the video you know I was
like I want a guy you know he’s gonna
snort some of them sawdust and smoke
some mushrooms and become Paul Bunyan
and go out there and start chopping
trees down his hands and you know kill
the Sun with a tree and then start
hallucinating
only thing I wish the girls had been
more grotesque that’s gonna I wanted
like that
la phenomenon a sixty wanting to look
twenty and having everything pumped into
you and giant circus tits and crazy lips
but the girls are in the video they’re
actually pretty so but well
great thank you very much no problem
getting better
