this Kiwi singer-songwriter infuses
emotion and jazz into her indie pop
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’re
speaking with Kimbra about her debut
album vows so let’s talk about thousand
what were you going for on their own
vows sort of you know started from the
age of 17 which is a long time ago now I
think about it even songs on there I
wrote when I was 15 16 so it really is
this kind of commentary of me going from
a 17 year old to be 21 22 pretty
defining years for any woman
it’s a piece of book that I’m proud of
but it’s also you know covering a lot of
ground and yeah I guess I’m excited to
go into the material now after work on
it for so long I want to talk about
coming to my hand tell us a bit about
that song the concept find the song in
the video the most challenging video
I’ve shot to this day really we shot
that video in the abandoned mental
asylum so it you know it wasn’t a set it
was actually the real deal and the lyric
itself is by telling lyric it’s you know
that feeling have been kind of trapped
inside your own emotions and being
unable to communicate their struggles to
someone and so having to visually
communicate that was full-on but I’m
really proud of it it’s my favorite one
I know you’ve been writing since you
were quite young how do you think that
your style or your music has changed
since you first started dating I mean
Becca New Zealand ice to just write
acoustic music with my guitar and guess
you know it was unreasonably kind of
safe and then I picked up a boss 8-track
which are these analog recorders and you
get to burn them to the seeding when we
finished your song and you could
manually mix the song yourself and I
think guess it was my first introduction
to production so I think I just started
to take a few more risks just stop being
scared of sounding a little bit weirder
odd it’s at times and just kind of went
with the emotion of the song
I want to ask you about fashion as well
tell us a bit about how you stay
fashionable on tour it’s not really the
top priority for me I guess it’s kind of
fun to create outputs day to day but the
main thing is on stage obviously to
create a further theatre to the music
I enjoy creating it you know a visual
dimension to the show I think it
imprints more of a memory for people
when they walk away as well it’s you
know there will never be more important
than the music it’s always first and
foremost about that but I think it’s
just a nice way to kind of create even
more of a magical world for people to
step inside
are you a kind of a secondhand shop kind
of girl totally yeah yeah it’s like five
dollars and totally you know and I just
love that challenge of trying to find
something for under twenty dollars you
know and of course to know I do have the
great luxury of working with some
amazing designers now which is really
cool as well but I find it really fun to
kind of pair a designer piece put
something vintage and kind of that
juxtaposition
do you have a favorite like secondhand
shop find actually these boots I got
these in Washington they would ten
dollars I feel like that’s pretty good
right that is good so they’re my current
favorite fun I think that’s a good note
to leave off on thanks very much thank
you
