Kid Koala Talks Turntablism

we gotta help you know manipulating
music and audio for an audience is just
another form of musical expression hi
I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
with DJ kid koala about his art and how
he gets in the zone run it’s kind of a
culture of the shy really about just
lock yourself in a room just learning
the craft and getting to that point
where you might have a melody in your
head and you might have just one note on
that record but you can bend that one
note into that melody in that you know
there’s expression what is turntablism
to you the fact that it’s called
turntable as announced its kind of weird
because what does that mean sounds like
a weird religion to me you don’t have to
look that deeply into it it’s just it’s
a mode of expression people some people
they gravitate towards guitars or
playing wine glasses or spoons or
writing guys like me it was always like
it this is it this is how I can express
myself filthy it’s like knobs and faders
and you’re like somewhere in here i can
find my voice
what is the most difficult thing
beautiful of the most difficult thing
which shouldn’t be the most difficult
things in size is just really clearing
your head really getting in that moment
get in the zone athletes call it the
zone writers college the zone musicians
call the zone and scratch DJ sometimes
you just have to like stop thinking
about what you’re doing is let let what
you practice it happen and that’s their
time stands still happens off stage
sometimes happens in the studio when
you’re working sometimes you know but
when you capture those moments they’re
pretty special now what about your other
artistic endeavors yes I have like three
kind of simultaneous semi professions
ones and kind of like graphic novels and
just telling stories that way others
like other the music side obviously and
then the third is like through touring
if I had like 10 tours over my career
and I wouldn’t want to say I just did
the same tour every time we try to put
together a show or curate a tour and
I’ve designed some sort of event to
happen on stage we try to make it noon
exciting for us and hopefully that
translates to the crowd
obviously we just got off the slough
which was the loudest tour I’ve been my
ears are still ringing that was like a
full-on rock out jump on your turntables
kind of event and it was fun to me it’s
just about just doing what’s next what
keeps you motivated excited about
getting up in the morning I don’t know
what that is yet right now we know what
it is for today thank you very much cool
thank you
