Jack Daniel’s: The World’s Best Selling Tennessee Whiskey

this is the world’s most famous whiskey
straight out of Tennessee hi my name is
Stephanie welcome to watchmojo.com and
today we’re celebrating the hundred 60th
anniversary of Jack Daniels so what can
you tell me about the history of Jack
Daniels well Jack Daniel was a real
person he started making whiskey and
registered the distillery in 1866 he
actually found a great spot in Lynchburg
Tennessee because there’s a cave spring
there and out of that cave spring flows
some very pure pristine water so he had
a great water source and he only bought
the best grains so Jack took his whiskey
to Saint Louis to the World’s Fair in
1904 and he was going to enter the
whiskey in to a competition and
everybody there never heard of Jack
Daniels Tennessee whiskey so they
laughed at it but he had the last laugh
because he walked away with a gold medal
so that was really the first time that
the world was introduced to Jack Daniel
has the taste or the flavor of the Jack
Daniels whiskey changed over the years
we like to think that it has not because
we’re doing the exact same process as
Jack Daniel did we’re taking the best
grains 80% corn 12% volume all 8% rye
we’re taking that same case spring water
our distillery is still there today now
that you guys use specific barrels for
different types of whiskey can you tell
me a bit about that the barrels are
toasted and charred on the inside when
we toast the barrel wood we do the same
thing as when a piece of bread is
toasted meaning that we unlock flavors
and aromas and colors in the wood
because the whiskey after its charcoal
mellowed goes into the barrel as clear
as water but it comes out the color that
you’re all familiar with can you tell me
a bit about the aging process of 10
whiskey and you decide when it’s mature
enough we don’t look at a calendar and
say okay on this particular day the
whiskey will be ready like a piece of
fruit it’s ready when it’s ready it’ll
be mature when it becomes mature but
what we do is we actually sample barrels
in the warehouses at defined periods of
time so we can see how the whisky is
maturing so we can say okay based on
what we have now we can let it mature
for so many more months or so many more
years to get that consistent taste that
people have come to expect how would you
say JT is best enjoy there is no long
way to enjoy Jack Daniels whiskey unless
you enjoy it in an irresponsible manner
I tell people if they want to drink it
neat that’s great if they want to put it
on the rocks that’s great if they want
to mix it with coke that’s great so
enjoy how you like it
you’re a master taster at the Jack
Daniel’s distillery can you tell me a
bit about your daily activities will
actually taste whiskey before I have my
morning cup of coffee but what I do is
taste whiskey throughout the day at
certain periods of time and what I’m
looking for are those certain
characteristics that are inherent to
Jack Daniels whiskey
we won’t bottle it unless it passes my
taste test how did you get this well I
grew up in Lynchburg Tennessee
my father was taster when he was there
and I was lucky enough to get a job
there after college and I’ve worked in
several different departments there at
the distillery and work my way up to
become master taster so it takes
practice at the taste every day
sometimes people who think I have the
best job in the world
then those say it’s not so great because
I have to spit the whiskey out there
quite a few legends about the lucky
number 7 on the label what’s your theory
behind this I like to think that he sent
a shipment of whiskey to a customer that
was mistakenly unmarked so at the train
station they randomly market with a
number 7 the customer wrote back please
send more of that old number 7 and Jack
Daniel kind of adopted that but again
nobody knows you bet glad to be here
