speaking with Sharon from Within
Temptation about her origins and her
musical training
we always like to start with the origin
stories of the bands Dmitri so tell us
how Within Temptation first got together
we were 19 and we were in another band
called the circle making some of music’s
good invitation and robucket kicked out
during the recording process and he and
I started a new band
most of them members who are in this era
are back in our band now so the secret
circle is round again
what was the music scene like in the
Netherlands when you guys were starting
out Robert started the bands you know
with the circle that’s at the time and
with my tiny keyboard player he was
really coming out of death metal period
and me listen to the most heaviest bands
and then a certain point he was like
okay I listened to this band and it
can’t go any heavier a harder or more
faster so you know he missed the melodic
elements into it he wants to bring that
back in combination with the grunting
voice and my time Makeba play was really
into all this folk kind of music and
when they teamed up together they made a
mixture of that kind of feeling and they
just made a new kind of music
we were like how we said in touch touch
expression the strange duck in the scene
you know everybody was like this can’t
be true you know they’re you know this
is a female fronted a little bit weird
you know people felt was strange but we
had a big following quite quickly as
well because all the boys would bring
their girlfriends finally into some
concert you know but in the beginning
the mill voices were more up front when
we start the presentation was
immediately like 5050 and after one
album the grunting focus just
disappeared we felt like it was almost
becoming a gimmick with so many bands
we’re starting up doing the same thing
and we felt like we were past that a
little bit and want to do something new
again
now I know you’re a self-taught musician
you want to tell us a bit more about
your training for lack of a better term
I just taught myself just listening to
songs which I like very much and then
trying to listen so good and carefully
and trying to sing along with it and
everything every time I went wrong with
a certain note that I could hear it very
well like okay this is going wrong and I
could try it for 20 times maybe 50 times
I drove my parents crazy tell us about
some of the songs that you practice –
well they’re pretty different for what I
do some people when they want to play
guitar you know Steve Vai is like the
guy you know to play like oh if I can
play like Steve Vai I’m the man I could
sing like Mariah Carey I am the girl
