our flair for fashion and trademark
vintage style have made the
singer-songwriter a natural fit in the
world of fashion
hi I’m Nina and welcome to watchmojo.com
today we’re speaking with Vivi Brown
first of all let’s talk about how you
ended up on the catwalk in the pages of
Vogue magazine it’s quite a cool story
actually I was on my way to New York to
see my boyfriend at the time he was a
model and he was working in Fashion Week
and the lady that was saying next to me
was actually had Booker and next models
and then she was reading both magazine
he British Vogue and there was a big
picture of me in the magazine for one of
the musicians to watch for 2009 Britain
and so she said it was faith that we’d
met and we sat next to each other and
then I was signed to next models but I’m
really interested and excited about
doing more editorial stuff where it’s
not about fashion it’s more about
photography and it’s about capturing a
moment and in an emotion in a picture
rather than trying to sell me clothes
who are some of your fashion icons my
fashion icons are Dorothy Dandridge
she’s beautiful and her fashion sense
was so feminine and graceful
I love the 50s because women were women
and men were men and then Grace Jones is
another person I love her fashion sense
and she’s another black woman who is
pushing boundaries
you know I love vivienne westwood
it doesn’t matter how much she ages she
always maintains a punk mentality and
she always looks fabulous I like the
fact that you know she’s representing a
punk street culture in a very climate
control way
tell us how you see the connection
between music and fashion I think when
you’re the kind of artist where you’re
writing and creating your own music you
generally have a high sense of style
because you know you you are your
identity is strong it’s all coming from
one place and that is you the individual
what would you say are some of the
things you look for when shopping for
clothes and what’s the best thing you
ever bought at a thrift shop it depends
because when I’m on the street hanging
out with friends whatever I’m I tend to
have a more geek chic look
well I like things a bit more bag ear
and scruffy and my hair is usually
scruffy I usually wear glasses but when
I’m on stage it’s maybe a little bit
more sassy or probably something a bit
more extravagant people can escape into
my outfits and it’s like another world
and it’s a chance for me to play in my
alter ego being Vivi the space Amazon
warrior woman
I think the best thing I’ve ever bought
was this black dress and it has like a
superhero cape and sometimes when I’m in
London I wear it on my moped and it
flicks out that’s cool
