Interview with Trivium

known for complicated riffs and distinct
vocals this metal band also produces
meaningful lyrics
hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com our host eric got the
chance to chat with lead vocalist matt
from Trivium
we always like to start with a brief
introduction of what the band is about
or how it came together was asked to try
out for this band called Trivium that
have been existing for about two weeks
before our Joey started playing with the
band in 1999 when I was about 12 13
years old we kept making demos and
touring around just floored I never
really outside of the country or outside
of the state even got sign of life force
records in 2003’s senator Robo Records
2004 started touring in April of 2004
and have been on tour ever since if you
had to introduce the band’s style to
people who have never heard you what
would you say and I mean you feel free
to apply it to subgenres or not there
are so many genres nowadays and even
when I was when I was a kid before it we
got signed I used to be obsessed with
genres and I would call everything every
specific name it’s it’s almost like
naming species of plants nowadays with
how ridiculous genres are getting the
furthest I’ll go into our band is is to
say metal because we draw from so many
different subgenres of it of itself but
it always traces back to that I mean
we’re definitely not a country man or a
pan or a punk band or a hardcore band
but it’s a metal band at the roof
you’ve been quoted in the past is saying
that your influences range from Slayer
to Iron Maiden I mean those we can we
can hear but you’ve also mentioned in
some interviews the Beatles or even like
Kelly Clarkson so yeah you want to tell
us how that applies to songwriting Kelly
not so much these days I was I was
listening to nerburn the crusade
sessions not that it sounds like it at
all well maybe on like two of us on
all good music is good music no matter
what it is no matter what style it is if
you like it it’s okay if you’re like a
black metal or death metal kit you like
pop that’s okay
I mean sure your friends might think
nothing is cool but it’s okay when I
start off like I was really into black
metal at fifteen sixteen and I basically
only liked it if it was the most obscure
band that no one could ever pronounce
his name or knew what it was from or it
was the most evil satanic band you could
find but nowadays for me it’s all about
the song no on YouTube I love fans and
people just screwing around make mashups
and stuff like that how do you feel that
stuff like that and the internet culture
in general effects your career bands
careers I’d like to think that stuff
helps you know because people don’t just
check on their friend stuff maybe will
listen to me like oh what’s this and I
remember that that parity thing I pull
hard I think got a lot of people into
our fan
I thought that thing was hilarious I
loved it well what’s so ironic about is
the dude that makes that really doesn’t
like our band apparently but we loved
that thing like we’ve got fans who
actually like make the boat rudder thing
and like hold it up as a sign and shit
you want to tell us kind of where your
head was that when you guys wrote Shogun
and went amazing I mean we we wanted to
make something that tied in everything
we’ve done that had parts of roofing
we’ve done it was the kind of record we
needed to make is when the sentence II
came out it definitely established our
band as that sound and when we had a
certain fanbase crusade was such a
drastic departure we consciously made
something that was the exact opposite
the sentence II and then I think Shogun
brought everyone back together
we need to just nail what our sound is
because the last few records they’ll
sound like us but stylistically it is a
little different here and there from
time to time and we want this next one
to be the Trivium sound making it
absolute best song as possible meaning
that whether you like metal or not what
you get metal or not you can get this
record we also want it to be
multilingual because we spend a lot of
time in non-english speaking countries
where English is in the main is in the
main language we want it to be lyrically
something that I mean one can hold on to
it anyone could understand or at least
get the essence of it caught in their
mind so they can sing along and have a
good time with it
so our next record is gonna be the best
thing we’ve ever done for sure
thanks a lot from you doing this thanks
very much
