Interview with Travie McCoy of Gym Class Heroes

hey what’s up you watch you watch mutter
komm with your boy Malik Shaheed and
today we’re gonna meet one of the most
unique versatile swagalicious artists in
the music game we’re gonna be blowing up
what are your musical influences because
you know you have a very unique style I
have very very indiscriminate ears you
know listen to growing up a listen to
anything from you know 60s and 70s soul
music
my grandmother was heavy into country
music my mom was just as into poison and
hair meadow Holly notes you know was
really big in a household Phil Collins I
mean my uncle gave me Metallica and
justice for all from that moment on I
always had a insatiable insatiable
appetite for hip-hop you know I mean I
think all of that kind of creeps its way
into whatever I do some people kind of
you know come out the gate and say oh
well you know I make this type of music
and you know artists get bored in the
mean so there are different things but
if you kind of you know put ‘slap-ass
label on yourself you know you kind of
put this glass ceiling over over you
know your creativity and your artistry
and the minute you you kind of want to
try something new your fans know that’s
not what you told us that’s not what you
given my daughter started I apologize
for that I apologize
stitch you are so bad oh man is what
happened
smiling next to Oprah and the Queen
so tell us about your single what were
the ideas behind it what made you come
up with them Bruno and I have the same
A&R so Aaron was kind of like you know I
got this guy on LA I think you should
hook up with you know he’s a he’s a
genius and people I work with I like to
have like you know you know on a
personal level have a relationship with
before we do anything musically so Bruno
and his production partner Phil flew out
to Miami and we hit it off from the jump
you know cracking jokes on each other
you know and I was like I cool we can do
this and we actually wrote billionaire
that day yeah you know he had the idea
for a billionaire you know the hook the
hook idea and at first I was kind of
like well where can I go with this you
know I was like Eureka you know I can
kind of pose the question to listener
you know if you were in this position
and had a ton of money would you be
selfish or would you be selfless
you look like a guy who enjoys doing
shows what makes your show unique the
minute that first snare hits or the
first chord is played I just kind of
turned into this completely different
person it’s kind of it’s kind of
exciting to watch that that
transformation you know sometimes I
watch videos and I’m just like
you know I kind of feed off the energy
at the crowd and I feed off the energy
of the guys that I’m onstage with it’s
kind of unspoken exchange of energy
between us that kind of translates out
into the crowd and it’s just fun
tell us about your love for art and
tattooing up anything you can shut it
out well actually I got my first tattoo
when I was 14 as you could tell I mean
it’s become a huge huge trend lately to
kind of just go to a tattoo artist and
same tattoo me you know and I called it
I called the the just add water effect
you know people just want to go to a
tattoo shop and get their their whole
body’s tattoo but I’ve been collecting
tattoos since I was 14 I actually been
tattooing for going on a living 11 years
now so I’ve kind of been knee-deep in
tattoo culture since I was a kid
let you go you gotta do a show
congratulations you know I like about
you have a very positive unique energy
only very people can put that off in
Arlen they all day
