this indie band is making a name for
itself by mixing fast guitars with pop
melodies hi my name is stephanie and
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’re
speaking to tokyo police club
we’d like to start with the origin story
of the band if you could give us maybe a
brief synopsis of how tokyo police club
came about well we are all from the same
town and we were all friends and right
around high school we decided we ought
to form a band and we didn’t know anyone
else that like music so we thought we
should form van with each other and him
so we did that
how would you describe Tokyo Police Club
sound pop music I think people are just
disappointed when I say that but it is I
said that’s actually the best answer
it’s not just a cop out I don’t think
it’s just pop music that’s it is that
which i think is the best innovation
yeah I think we’ve largely sort of just
done whatever whatever feels good and in
the beginning that was I guess the
angular overused word but I mean yeah we
just sort of anymore just do whatever we
feel like doing and the broad umbrella
is definitely pop
how would you say your music has changed
since your debut elephant shell I don’t
know it’s tough for me to sakes we’re
right there right so it seems pretty
dull library progression just seems
minuscule to us and so by the time it
actually changes we barely noticed it’s
like watching your parents get grow
older it’s just you do you don’t really
notice it because there’s your eyes and
but I don’t know I think we’ve got more
confident in ourselves I think we’re
more sure of what we want to do and
we’re better at executed
did you want
did you guys feel a lot of pressure to
live up to your debut album quite the
contrary actually because we put in an
EP before elephant shell that I would
say was critically fairly well received
elephant shell not so much people had
expectations and we either met them or
didn’t meet them and actually there was
I wouldn’t called a backlash but i would
say elephant shell was received mixed
reviews there was more pressure for
elephant show yes i’ma leave in champ
yes and then it was great because champ
are like Oh everybody hates us now
that’s why we could just do anything we
have nothing to lose we’ve nowhere to go
but up it was awesome not that everybody
hated us but it really about freeing
when it was just now you know some
people like us some people don’t wear a
normal band let’s make a record
conversations so what would you say is
the musical direction that you took
fortune I don’t know if there’s a
specific musical direction it was just
sort of a mindset that we were in that
we were a lot more comfortable with you
know putting a second or third chorus
into a song I supposed to you know a
lesson in crime would’ve said no we need
one course and that’s it it’s done good
enough I think we’re just we’re just a
little bit more comfortable with the
material and yeah it looks comfortable
with executing i would say that maybe we
were also a little more directly happy
to make music that was just fun to play
and fun to listen to and we weren’t
worried so much about anything else is
just if it felt good that was good
how would you describe your relationship
with your friends I would say it’s
pretty healthy we skew a little younger
or at least the people that we meet are
generally more in the mid to late
teenage ratio which I love because that
was the time of my life where I was the
most honest in my enthusiasm and
appreciation of music and next now I’m
cynical you know I’m old I’m a little
older and I just I know too much about
music I know too much about bands and
stuff and it just I can’t like stuff was
honestly so yeah I get psyched when I
see people there of that age like yes it
means that they really like us thank you
so much guys thank you
