Interview with The Wanted on ‘Battleground’

after making it big at home these
British bad boys are trying to make it
stateside hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’re
speaking with the wanted about their
album battleground
I had to see
dreams cheap
let’s talk about battleground just tell
us kind of what what you’re going for
what you think you’ve achieved I mean
we’d all come from different musical
backgrounds and because it’s pop we
could mix them but I think we kept it
quite safe we had like some really
experimental tracks but mostly we were
like I was just trying to fit our voices
together and make our sound which we did
we made the sound but then second time
around we were trying to get creative we
wanted to make some weird stuff we
wanted we really wanted to do a little
bit more up-tempo get people on their
feet but then also there’s some stuff in
there that’s a little more aggressive we
had some issues we got some record label
problems when we were like seriously
we’re not wearing matching clothes and
it was quite stressed and I think that
all came out in the songs we liked we
wanted to have a bit of balls and I
think the album does so hence the name
is a little progressive but I mean it’s
from a song Max and they throw called
war zone it’s totally the greatest song
of all time so you chew
so let’s talk about war zone
give us a concept for the song and for
the video well it was just about a girl
cheats on cheats on the guy cuz I think
I think a lot of the time I think that
the the guy gets the the stick for it so
we just came up with the concept of it
being the other way around
we wanted it to be not just just words
we wanted the music to be heavy Tom’s a
big dubstep fan and he’s always banged
on about his so we we had that put in it
to give it you know some hard-hitting
beats and stuff and and and literally
make it as aggressive as we could
without you know without the lyrics if
we’re gonna strangle someone
in the video as well we actually got
girls in and a guy this with your
girlfriend and she’s cheating in you
capture owl I think it really came
together I think the producers in
ourselves did a pretty good job on that
one if we must say so ourselves I want
to blow my own trumpet hey the day in
the studio and Max and Nathan were
recording no one stepped in the studio
is the most aggressive angry studio just
just stayed away we were next door
actually writing one of the cheesie’s
love songs of all time that got caught
but war zone
I mean you guys obviously did some
writing on this one do you see
yourselves writing more in the future
yeah I think there’s been a steady
progression the first album we wrote
something like 50% and we really bout
for that the first time we went in the
studio is a five you were a single in
first time called behind bars and the
record I were impressed but they were
still like this is what we want you to
do eventually you want to say okay we
want your help and guidance what we want
to do what we want to do and second
album I think that’s what happened we
stayed the ship and got a great help
from our record label iron in the UK and
yeah I think every time we go we’re
getting better and I mean some of these
boys were in song right into like five
anyway I’m a two-year newbie but yeah I
think that’s the plan because it’s it’s
creatively satisfying I think
