Interview with the Planet Smashers

as with all music trends ska has come
and gone but the planet smashers are
here to stay hi I’m Rebecca Braden and
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’re
speaking with lead Smasher Matt about
the band and its place in the sky seen
you weren’t studying music or even
business when you started stop can you
just tell us about how the record label
came to be doing engineering and a few
other friends of mine were also in
school and were like this big band was
kind of a joke we’re just having a good
time and slowly after a while it became
more serious and we recorded some music
one wanted to put it out so we made our
own label that’s pretty much it and how
do you think that you know you and the
record label and the band have evolved
in that time I’m like this mattress it
for the Fall Ball has been the same this
isn’t you know good time Scott man but
the label has involved a lot it became
much more serious i’m the first I don’t
know five years of its existence it
wasn’t really label you know I’d go on
the road and we just you know be making
a few phone calls he tried having a
store for a while we added a lot of new
bands who are roster def very serious
some of the bands did really well like
bedouin soundclash it doesn’t feel like
it was such a massive endeavor it just
feels like we just kind of slowly built
a little little Lego toy we want to call
it stomp records
and maybe for those members of our
audience who aren’t really familiar with
Scott can you just tell us about what
skies and maybe the third wave as well
which I think you guys are part of it
came from Jamaica before before reggae
just before reg it but it’s it’s very
similar form it’s a more up-tempo
version of reggae you could say
basically when Jamaica became
independent was very joyful time so they
have happy for me music came out and
then things started slowing down third
wave is uh what they called everything
that happened in North America after the
British two tone waves so there was this
Jamaican wave in the sixth season there
was late 70 a two tone from Britain
Britain and then I sorted out reinvented
in America and hyphenated into many
different forms and of blending things
from swing to jazz to Punk to launch its
terrible ending
do you credit any of your success too
good timing a little bit I mean in 95 we
were sort of riding that third wave of
Scott we did a fair bit but we didn’t
get over exposed like a lot of the u.s.
bands did so there was there was like a
anti Scott movement in the states from
about 2,000 to it’s pretty much over now
no one really cares in Canada there
wasn’t a lot of bands playing Scott at a
time let alone touring let alone putting
out CDs so yeah it was good time
now when I was doing my research I found
something about cat man I know you guys
have been featured in a few shows too
much tell us a bit more about that three
series of animated Japanese shorts
essentially of this is cat that’s pretty
dark he’s a dark character he gets into
trouble of time goes taste by the the
bad cats or whatever I don’t know but
it’s really really well done it’s
awesome he used all of our music for
every single episode it’s just our music
in it and they recently relaunched it in
Japan DVD came out and CD came out on
fuji TV they plated stuff I don’t really
know what happened but we went over to
japan and we hung out in school
