a little bit closer welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
with Sarah of Tegan and Sara about their
album heartthrob
something I always like to get an idea
of it’s your perception of your
evolution from album to album I think
that I sort of discount a few of our
early records because I just think that
those were the years we were sort of
figuring it out we didn’t have a lot of
studio experience and we were still I
mean we were figuring everything out
like most people in their teens and
early 20s I was figuring out who I was
where I was gonna live what my style was
so those records terrified me and I
don’t look at them very often or listen
to them but starting around 2004 was so
jealous that was the year that I moved
to Montreal I really started to feel
confident about how to use my vocals I
really started to see us as a band
it’s always been a goal for us to write
really confessional intense music that
relates to my life but can also relate
to your life or that guy’s life or that
girl’s life and I wanted the music to
reflect that like this endemic sort of
universal sounding music but I wasn’t
always good at executing that you know
so even though the intentions weren’t
good and I wanted to do that sometimes
we made more organic or indie rock
sounding records so I feel like with
this record I think we’ve achieved that
actually this time I think it’s a big
pop sounding record what would you say
the tone and poor throw of it is I feel
like it’s a really ambitious record like
it has a lot of energy it’s just sort of
like 10 pop songs like I think we wanted
to make something that was first listen
like that you would really get right
away but that would really grow to like
you know that you wouldn’t lose interest
in the songs they’re not surface songs
they’re songs that you can really grow
into I think that the the general tone
still is like an upbeat one you know
like I don’t think it’s a sad record but
then lyrically it’s pretty sad it’s like
so it’s over here it’s a weird combo a
bipolar
let’s talk a bit about closer the this
song and the video the concept there he
can sent me that song it was fairly in
the ballpark of where it is still now
and I remember thinking like wow this is
really different than what she’s been
writing I love that it was a different
perspective then I think people are
generally used to hearing with us it’s
not a breakup songs nobody’s nobody’s
hurt nobody sad nobody’s running this is
very much a flirtatious like it’s a love
song with the video we really wanted to
capture some of the like nostalgia of
like being young and having fun and sort
of like pre relationship pre drama just
sort of like when you just really dig
somebody you’re crushing out and it’s
like you have no idea what the future
holds
the kids in the video are so sweet
compared to the way we were we were
disgusting teenagers we were doing
terrible things we were doing that we
looked very ugly it was just that video
is like idyllic compared to the way we
were but this kind of idea of like
youthful having fun and flirting and
whatever we thought that that really
helped captured the spirit of the song
do you have a karaoke go-to song oh yeah
shot through the heart by Bon Jovi
anything by Bon Jovi’s I yours yeah you
really uncle for sure you’re good shot
through the heart and you’re to blame
darling you give love a bad name so good
I can do any Mondovi song yes bad
medicine is my go-to oh good
if you I give you so grumpy and people
could be like let’s do karaoke might be
like right guys I don’t want to and then
they put that on and I’m like guys give
me the microphone it’s my song yeah
that’s come in I’ve totally invested
close
Oh
can you come a little
