Interview with Switchfoot

sometimes known as the thinking person’s
band this group is known for mixing
faith and philosophy into their music hi
my name is stephanie and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
to switchfoot hello hurricane has been
described as a rebirth of sorts for you
guys so I was wondering if you could
tell me how and why exactly that is the
process was really long for us the
longest time we’ve ever spent making a
record almost three years in the studio
during that time we reported over 80
songs that’s a really productive period
of time for us you know that’s almost
for records where the material but then
the overwhelming problem is how do you
make one musical statement with all
these different directions sonically and
stylistically ultimately we chose the
songs that meant the most to us that
really moved us and that we want to be
playing every night and you know we kept
asking ourselves a question what do you
want to die sing it
a lot of these songs are the songs that
were written kind of alone in a room
struggling with the deep questions of
life and the things that are what you
wrestle with and they’re honest
statements about life and experience
life you know ultimately I think that’s
what attracts people to music and what
attracts us to fans we like is that
honesty I think that’s an amazing thing
about music that you can talk about
deeper issues that maybe you wouldn’t
even discuss openly in a conversation
with your friends but somehow in a song
it’s appropriate
I know that Switchfoot is also very much
involved with humanitarian causes such
as the one campaign Habitat for Humanity
why is it important for you guys to use
your status as musicians to promote
awareness for causes and issues like
this well I definitely think with our
touring we we got to a place a few years
ago we really wanted to make each tour
have a more lasting impact in the
communities that were in that’s actually
how hello hurricane the concept for that
title came about was one experience we
had down after Hurricane Katrina we were
able to go visit in Louisiana and work
shoulder-to-shoulder with with people
that had lost their homes in rebuilding
and creating new homes for their
families and that that story that
inspired the hello hurricane title was a
woman who had lost her leg in the
evacuation after Katrina she said I left
my house I walked out of my house in New
Orleans on my own two feet I’m gonna
walk into this new one you know and she
had a prosthetic limb was learning to
walk again and just an incredible image
of facing the storms of life head-on
one of the things that this album
embodies for us is hope when you’re in
the middle of a storm how can you have
hope hope is something you haven’t
obtained yet it’s something that you
look at your present circumstances and
you say this is not the end you know
there’s so much depravity in this world
but we know that that’s not how it’s
supposed to be thank you so much guys
thanks thanks for having us
