Interview with Patrick Watson

they’re dreamy cinematic sound makes
this cabaret pop classical music and
indie rock hi my name is Stephanie and
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’re
speaking with Patrick Watson
we’d like to start with the origin
stories of the band so I was wondering
if you guys could just briefly tell us
how you all got together well in fact
this is like we all study music together
and the first day I met Robbie we were
sitting on the steps going on what am i
doing in school and we looked at each
other and and we both kind of laughed
because I’m pretty sure we realized
we’re thinking the same thing like Andy
how are you and then we went to our
class and our class ended being in Samba
class which is where you play and it’s
where you were playing together and
we’ve been playing together ever since
now 1213 years when we started this
project it was like a multimedia we had
no idea would be a band we did these
kind of weird extravagant multimedia
shows and we were kind of more like a
scoring thing and then slowly we started
playing clubs and became a band so
how would you say the music has evolved
from album to album I think we’ve
evolved as people gotten better out of
craft at writing songs at writing lyrics
and coming up with what a song needs
we’ve also been part of the transition
of music like we’re we are in like we
are the generation of the end of the CD
we’re the generation of like the
beginning of the Internet we’re in right
in the middle like we’re not either
we’re still bit old school a little bit
new school so it’s kind of an
interesting place to be and also the
process of like having your own studio
or like all these things that completely
fundamentally changed the recording
industry and what it means to be an
artist we’ve been kind of in the heat of
it so I think it’s kind of been fun to
be a part of that and kind of like see
what the hell you got to do in this new
world
I wanted to ask you guys a bit about the
songwriting process is it something
that’s very collaborative or is it more
you write the lyrics and then the music
it’s all the above I think goes in
different ways sometimes musica comes up
with an idea and Pat come up with an
idea and they match it’s a it’s it’s
it’s part of a puzzle you know some
ideas go well together some ideas don’t
it depends on how the song grows we had
the luxury of time in the studio to
tried things and and some things worked
with some things didn’t some some things
we reworked a couple times sometimes it
was magic
so your music has been described as
being magical or dreamy even cinematic
do you guys agree with this and how do
you incorporate these elements into your
music I think we go to another place
however you want to call it that’s up to
you I think that when we play music I
closed my eyes and I enjoy closing my
eyes for that moment while I play music
and wherever it takes me is where it
takes me and it can take you wherever
where you like to go and if you want to
go with mystical creatures that’s okay
with me doesn’t break I don’t see
unicorns when I’m playing piano that’s a
question
I think when you pay a lot of shows you
realize something is that like a good
concert it’s like something you can
never prepare plan or expect then
something happens and there’s something
magical about the night and you there’s
no words there’s nothing something you
did something completely different
there’s something in the air that you
can’t put words on there’s this
incredible feeling to you and all the
audience there’s much yeah there’s no
better word to describe it as magical so
yeah the I strive for me personally as a
musician to get to that magical place
where they get that special feeling
what do you guys love most about making
music how do you keep your passion alive
for it I don’t remember ever deciding to
do music I music has been part of my
life since I was like seven years old
has been a part of who I am and who the
people around me are and you see just
what I do yeah look I don’t mean I love
it like I love when I play show on a my
whole body like vibrates and I get
goosebumps are going like top my head
feels like a drug you know difficult to
live without
but also you know all the things musics
brought to me I’ve met wonderful people
through music I’ve also seen a lot of
the world just pretty amazing thing yeah
there’s something that’s really
beautiful that happens to if you get to
that space it’s just being able to lose
yourself in a moment you know I think it
happens in many different art forms
this
music is great as it’s in the moment and
you’re creating it with people and being
able to be connected in that way that’s
a pretty beautiful thing thank you so
much for your time well thank you for
having us at our own house
