with their eighth album this legendary
canadian rock band is battling
complacency to release something truly
different hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’re
speaking with our lady peace about curve
so let’s talk about kerrville get right
into it yes in terms of the lyrical
themes what’s your interpretation of
what’s being covered on the album well I
think in general musically it’s just
very expressive record it’s a very
performance kind of based records I
think it’s very thematic I think more
than other records so I guess that could
definitely tie and lyrically as well for
sure
did your songwriting process on this one
very at all from what you’ve been doing
princeling yeah for sure because I think
the way that the the monster of the
music business has changed you know it’s
not as as big as it was radio went from
you know 12 lanes of different formats
to one and there’s less stations that
play rock music so I think you just kind
of make records based on your audience
and based on the music that you like and
then based on the record that you want
to make and I think by it being free of
having any label people coming in to
talk about singles or anything like that
or expectancies for singles I think we
just were really cautious of trying to
make a record that we really enjoyed to
play and to listen to
do you think that you guys got to a
point where you were making safe records
I don’t think we’re making safe records
but I can understand the some
constraints of the way the music
business is when you’re on a major label
that you’re the best vehicle for success
in a band is being on the radio you kind
of have to bend a little bit and now
that’s changed you think about you know
the 90s and early 2000s like music was
kind of weird you know it was odd like
it was a lot of heavy rock music fans
like limp biscuit and stuff like that I
mean that was that was what everybody
was listening to so when you’re in it
you don’t realize it what it is but when
you look back it’s like yeah you kind of
had to somehow fit into that at some
level and I think that’s probably what
would you know maybe what we’re talking
about you know what I mean it’s like you
got to get through some some stuff you
know to get to the good things
this
now I read that it’s and said that this
is the album you guys have been trying
to make for 10 years I think that’s rain
talking what he’s looking at is just the
fact that we were kind of not trusting
our instincts we’re just trying to maybe
been too much as opposed to just going
with the flow and that’s what we did
what was the overall goal when you guys
started making this album I think just
that you know to make a record that
we’re happy with you know and that means
you know something that we can listen to
as just music fans performance was a lot
to do with it as well and to me a band
is supposed to be a performer first and
record is supposed to be a capture of
that van performing as opposed to
nowadays just kind of like an album and
then the band tries to recapture that
which is kind of wrong you know it
doesn’t really make sense I don’t feel
think somewhere along the ways in the in
the 60s with the beatles and the 70s
with the multi-tracking that it kind of
got impossible to play a record and it
just became a whole other art form
that’s definitely valid but if you’re
talking about a band band playing live
it has to work you know has to sound
good as a four-piece or 5 fils or
whatever thank you very much all right
thank you
