Interview with Marina and the Diamonds: Fashion, Origins, Synesthesia

this Welsh singer songwriter has been
creating buzz with her unique music and
her unique style but it’s always so fun
hi I’m Rebecca Braden and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
with Marina and the Diamonds primadonna
we always like to start with kind of the
origin stories of the people that we
interview so why don’t you tell us how
you first came to follow music as your
dad I decided when I was about 15 but I
wanted to emulate Britney Spears didn’t
quite work out that way but that’s that
was kind of the age that I knew that I
wanted to be a singer big deal and then
when I was 19 I moved from Greece to
London I started to song right like
prolifically you know for two years
non-stop did a lot of the kind of
circuit and then I started to produce my
music and at 22 I got signed to Atlantic
Records and now my scigirl
I cannot put on me the prima donna life
the rising how would you describe your
sound well the first song was kind of it
was like a life filled pop album just
quite experimental and then the second
album is like a dark bubblegum pop album
that’s what my blueprint was in the
beginning I wanted it to be like a goth
Britney Spears yeah I wanted to use my
previous musical identity and mold that
into into the pop model and use that
system as a way of you know being able
to to tour on the level I want a student
to do the kind of stage productions that
I wanted big deal though
home aesthetics are obviously an
important part of your image and your
show and everything oh okay how much you
want to talk about like your fashion
choices in your style icons and that
kind of thing I like people who kind of
take the piss up and salsa I think
having a sense of humor is conducive to
being a pop star
I love Dolly Parton Gwen Stefani Shirley
Manson women who are kind of quite tough
have like a tough side to them you see
there’s this fun fact about you that I’d
like you to explain a little bit how you
see music Oh
synesthesia basically the way I describe
it I connect different colors to like
different numbers days of the week and
also when I’m kind of playing the piano
so it’s not something that even like
enters my mind on an everyday basis but
I noticed that like I I was doing it and
I asked my sister she was like no just
huh I was like really so I started to
google it and I saw that other people is
especially people in the creative fields
it’s not common but it’s definitely out
there that is a fun fact to leave off on
thank you very much thank you
