Interview with Machine Head’s Phil Demmel About Unto the Locust

they’re metal icons plain and simple hi
I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
with machine heads Phil Demmel about
unto the locust
what would you say are the biggest
differences between you and robbers
guitarists differences he’s a lot more
disciplined than I am he’s a creature of
habit he that he goes through his
warm-up exercises you know the same
every day and you know it’s it’s a
Bennett in my head you know it’s vocal
exercises – he’s just a creature of
habit
he’s just a better guitar player than I
am he’s better better sense of timing
you know and his rhythm is really really
tight and I think that I compliment him
I think that’s my role in the man is to
complement his playing and I come up
with some melody lines on my own and
stuff but I mean this is his band that’s
my role and I know I accept it
he has produced the last few elements
together now as a band made of his being
produced by him how is it I prefer it he
lives
breathe shits eats sweats you know
machine head 24/7 you know and that’s no
bullshit there’s not a second one he’s
not thinking about something for this
guy
and that means that he knows what we
should sound like and to hand that over
to somebody who you know might have
other ideas it’s just like he’s done
every record since I’ve been in the band
so that’s the only producer that I’ve
known and he knows how the riffs should
go out it should be played you should
Paul meet this here or this is how I’m
doing this here or notes here and he’s
opened fir he’s open for feedback too
and ideas as well and that’s what I love
is that he’s accepting of like yeah okay
you want to try this let’s try that
these awesome to work with there’s gonna
be times when you’re at odds a little
bit but there’s nobody else I’d want to
produce this man
I started writing lyrics with him on
this record I supplied some on the
blackening but this time co-wrote a lot
of the tunes which was awesome for me to
be able to help in that sense I offer a
different descriptive style a variety of
he’s more of the you know first-person
hi you me you know and then I’m more of
a colorful element like the color guy
and not to his play caller
do you and tell us a bit more about the
song locust and the concept for the
video as well everybody has the people
in their life I’ve had them and I
decided just to write about it people
that come into your life just steal and
Rob all your resources from you you know
your emotions your money or you know
your sold your humanity and then you
discover what they’re about and then
just up and fly away and had a battle
had a serious battle and decided to
write about it
you use your songwriting as a form of
catharsis absolutely this record in
particular has been so cathartic for me
the locust lyrics being a part of the
song be still and know is I actually
have a tattoo right here that I got
before I was in the man
my grandmother was brought up in a
Christian household on she had about 20
grandkids or whatever and each grandkid
had their own Bible verse and it was
what she thought about the kid and this
is you know this is gonna be the other
sisters like your identification type
the mine was Psalm 46:10 which is
Bastila know that I’m the Lord and I
think it comes from my areas nature of
being impatient and so it’s just just
see and the dawn will rise you know Sun
will subtle shine through darkest night
and Rob had known about the tattoo and
and he’d heard the verse before and you
know I had told him would have been what
she she said to me so he kind of took it
on and we kind of got together for part
of lives and singing some of those
lyrics for that and locust every night
or just you know a well up and getting
the most from house
music is therapy and this was a tough
session to go through but you know glad
we did
awesome that you’re able to even emote
with your audience cuz I mean I’m sure
they will take that from it and be able
to thank you literally and that’s and
that’s the thing that’s that’s the
reason why I’m doing music the reason
that I do this is for that that energy
that reciprocation you know this is what
I have and it gets accepted and then you
see it back and you hear stories from
women people too and you know that
you’re reaching people and and you know
not on a huge level but even you know on
a little level makes it vindicates what
you’re doing kind of justifies
everything
