Interview with Kelis

it’s Jewboy Malik Shaheed for
watchmojo.com today we are gonna meet
someone you may know for her hits such
as milkshake
bossy car out there but today she brings
a new energy and a new vibe and I want
you to meet police let’s go inside and
check her out let’s talk about your
first single acapella you worked with
David Guetta tell us about the
inspiration for your lyrics for that
song you know I was pregnant when I
recorded the majority this album gives
you a real reverence for life and God
something bigger than yourself
and so I just sort of came out that way
I saw the first video very unique tell
us about were the ideas and a concept
came from for that first video well it’s
a story I wanted the visuals to be as
impactful and as strong as the record
was for me and so it’s kind of just how
to get that feeling across you know if
you could turn this town off what do you
say does it still give you that kind of
feeling you know
and your second singles fourth of July
tell us about where the title came from
for that single you know you think about
what fireworks actually are and you know
it’s kind of well you’ve got the you
know independence and sort of like that
breaking free kind of feeling then you
also got just like this fire in the dark
you know and that’s sort of this
explosive love it’s it’s intense this is
the first video called directly to the
second video club that I did you know I
always try to write my own treatments
and collaborate with the director I
think I got credit for this my work with
Rankin who’s amazing and he’s just so
brilliant he’s just great helping you
portray the ideas that you have and sort
of bringing them to life it’s been with
a good experience I’m a fan of classic
house music was there any influence over
there are you someone who’s a fan of
classic house music I mean yeah I’m a
fan of music in general you know
honestly love the old school house a
lovely Chicago kind of like you know
back in the day I’m a vocal kind of
house music lover
you know honestly for this record it was
really just sort of what I thought and
how it you know I mean they could
naturally came out it wasn’t really like
a plan or I didn’t sit down and say oh I
want to do something it sounds like this
I’ve kind of just sort of evolved into
this
and also you guys had a sense of fashion
possible why you’re so much so much into
fashion it’s a great way to express
yourself I think it’s a you know it’s a
real art form when done properly and you
know I think fashion and music have
always gone hand in hand so it’s just
natural tell us the importance of being
versatile today’s music well I don’t
think it’s just in music I think it’s
important to be versatile in life
there’s so many great things and life
has so much to offer music gets from a
shop or that you’ve got to be able to
you know kind of roll with it I want to
say congratulations you know I mean
you’re looking great looking great
