Interview with Kasabian’s Tom Meighan on ‘Velociraptor!’

this raucous band is able to honor their
musical heroes while still pushing the
musical limits hi I’m Rebecca Brayton
and welcome to watchmojo.com and today
we’re speaking with Kassabian
so tell us the origin story at the
Syrian when I was 16 17 years old I met
a guy called Sergio pizzorno and it was
around the time the Britpop was really
huge in that and he said to me would you
like to sing in a rock band and I
thought you know why not
we went to school together and all that
and we’re really different separate
classes different kind of gangs and
rehearse relentlessly you know like a
religion three or four times a week then
one day you just fell in the hands of a
you know record come here
we got signs and now I’m here
I’m now fair you want there you guys
so who did you grab listening to I mean
who are some of your main idols and
icons well you know of course you know
Mom my older was you know everyone’s
pretty much the same Michael Jackson was
my orders in the eight years of being a
kid in yang is a I did I was it brought
on Motown music as my parents looked at
him to carpenters and Patsy Cline and
stuff like that so it was yeah a nice
musical background I’d say yeah I was
gonna ask any influences we might not
expect but I did not expect that
yeah well yeah he goes how do you think
you guys have evolved from album to
album like what does each album
represent well the first record you know
we lived on a farm what we made so we
were very under the influence of
something at the time you know which was
great and it’s kind of hazy space looped
beats and stuff you know who’s quite
space rock you know and the second album
empires was I could read read for it
pretty pretty bad time at record because
we lost the band member and everyone’s
drinking quite heavy she was quite an
aggressive record you know quite a
lattice record and a beer-fueled and it
wasn’t we’re hearing frozen and the band
then and the West Ryder was we’re gonna
make concert album God grew my hair long
down here and dressed up you know for
the front cover did some a bit fun in a
bit bit crazy you know but uh and that
was our sake death date record and our
last album Velociraptor was just a good
great pop album you know the pop songs
on so but then I want the next record
so let’s talk about Velociraptor any
great stories from the writing and
recording process and what you guys were
going for you know what we pretty much
we basically searched got a load of
songs together and I’ve I thought you
know we’re gonna record it late last
summer and I was praying to God if we
can get on with it and the court
equipped me you see cuz I can’t I don’t
want to be left at home from 6-8 months
not doing anything or touring it’s long
it’s quite numbing for me you know and
uh he was like I’ve already songs and
we’re going next month I was like wow
you know cuz we only finished touring
not September or back out again so I was
not brilliant so went to San Francisco
and we did the vocals with Dan the OL
mayor and it was great you know
what made you guys choose to document
the recording process we got document
your life haven’t you know it’s nice if
you look back you know hey so is it for
you or been first for me and then you
know all of us you know it’s about Mela
I’m a same when I’m not 45 or 50 I like
Majan an anthology or something on the
band or or a film on us that’d be
amazing
we’ve got so much footage and on before
it went on we know when were 18 and you
know it’s amazing
do you like to watch your stuff back
well I sometimes get a bit weird with it
you know if I’m drunk then I love it
you know I think it’s brilliant I sit
back keep watching it you know
