you may know them as one of the best
indie rock bands on the scene today or
as the trio that brought you the 1997
hit boom Bop hi I’m Rebecca Braden and
welcome to watchmojo.com and today we’re
speaking with Hanson
we always like to start with the origin
stories of the bands that we interview
so tell us how you guys originally
decided that you wanted to form a band
how did we decide we wanted to form a
man I mean it probably started honestly
I’m trying to decide whether to be
really facetious here it started around
the kitchen table I mean it started
around it started when we realized that
that people responded to a singing
casually
our family is musical both of our
parents like to sing but it didn’t
really seem professionally you know just
saying sort of in church in in this and
that and and so it was natural for us to
sing hymns national for that to be part
of what we’re doing and I think sort of
like they said we would just do it you
know oh here we are at a family
get-together or with some friends let’s
sing a song and I think we started
writing songs Isaac probably in
particular started writing songs and
that that was probably one of the first
things that like well okay here’s our
own music and it’s not not bad it’s okay
we’re doing okay yeah and Zak was like I
would write some more songs but I’m
still learning to read yeah I’m only fo
greater play leg
to be you know kind of honest in
somewhat self-deprecating with you know
here you are you know you’re young kids
so there’s a degree to where you know
people initially are like oh wow they’re
they’re young and they can see that oh
this is this is kind of cute and clever
and then and that as and then it quickly
it kind of became a little bit more than
that you know I remember particularly we
did a performance and got a standing
ovation and we’re like wow that’s cool
and so we’re like we need to make a
record that night went to a very very
very amateur recording studio and
basically stood there live with you know
with microphones and recorded you know
what was at the time an album although
is it every song we knew who slew an
album it was every single song we knew
every single song we’d written we just
stood there went one two three next song
go you know and sang it and we good we
paint mechanicals on those songs I think
it was also our first late-night session
do I think that that session actually
ended about 10:30 11 o’clock and not yet
and I’m sure I was probably sleeping
last time I checked you know at six
years old you usually you know not used
to staying up that late
the thing about our history as well is
even though we started particularly
young I mean most musicians most artists
start as kids I mean some you know you
got to start somewhere
you start hearing music making music and
even though we were relatively young
when we began to be a band we went out
and he did gigs like we we played shows
a lot of shows long before we were
signed I mean we did over 300 shows
before I was 13
we earned our stripe subway bands do I
would never trade that I mean I would
trade some of those weekends for you
know maybe some other activities of it
but but I would never trade the idea of
going out and learning your craft and
being a performer early because you
can’t you can’t fake that
you can’t get that understanding of
yourself as an artist any other way than
to go out there and work and get in
front of audiences over and over and
over and and and have to figure out not
just how to like write a good song or
how to play play well and not screw up
along the way but how to actually be a
performer how to be so comfortable in
what you’re doing that you’re not
thinking about okay what’s the next
corridor am I seen this well but to
actually be thinking okay how am I am i
grabbing that person on the front row
you know and and I think a lot of
artists now I mean these days I think a
lot of artists because technology is out
there kind of miss out on having to do
that
