Interview with Director Laura Turek

film festivals are great way for movie
lovers to discover the next big director
even before Hollywood does hi I’m
Christine and we’re on watchmojo.com
we’re at a mixing studio we’re going to
be talking to one of these up-and-coming
directors loora Toora loora you have a
background in television how do you make
the transition to writing and directing
a fiction film for the longest time ever
since I don’t know I can remember I’ve
always wanted to write my own stories
until I guess the story from a to Zed
rather than I guess letting it happen on
the screen like you do in documentaries
your second short film my friend Anna is
about anorexia what was your inspiration
for writing and making this film my
inspiration for my friend Anna is
actually personal when I was a teenager
unfortunately I guess like a lot of
girls I had trouble with eating
disorders and so by the time I was in my
mid 30s I said you know what I in a
write a story about how I felt when I
was a teenage girl what I thought about
what was going through my mind and to
tell you the truth my dad when I wrote
the story I had him read it and he said
a beautiful story where did you get the
inspiration from and I couldn’t say dad
dad I live that and the weirdest thing
is once that film came out so many women
and young girls were saying oh my gosh
that’s my story so you kind of also go
oh really something that you think is so
personal you’re telling everybody else’s
story now your third film men in the
family is in post-production I found it
interesting that you used a South Asian
family to tell the story without relying
on any kind of stereotypes what was your
inspiration for this film it deals with
death in the family or the potential
death of a family member i had read an
article about a little girl who was
trying to save her mother
and before the leaves fell off the trees
and that sparked my imagination and I
thought you know what if it was someone
who didn’t know anything about leaves
falling off trees no I haven’t told him
yet what the hell am I supposed to say
he’s only 5 i’m no good with children
the biggest thing when i’m writing a
film or i’m directing a film is I want
it to be real I mean I guess we can all
say that but it really i really look for
truism realism in my projects the
dialogue the way people act everything I
really like people to go yeah yeah I
believe it
what advice would you have for FileMaker
just starting out you know what the best
advice is don’t listen to anybody no I’m
serious because a lot of people think I
got to go to school I’ve got to do it
this way honestly you have an idea you
have a camera you want to write
something you want to experiment go for
it honestly that is the biggest advice
don’t let anybody say you can’t do it
just do it thank you so much for taking
the time out today from your post
production work Thank You Laura
