so you think you’re pretty funny and
you’ve got the idea that maybe one day
you’d like to be a comedian well there
is a big difference between being hit at
a party and headlining at a comedy club
i’m here today with community john
tastings a young budding comedian who is
going to enlighten us as to some of the
things you should know and some of the
things you should avoid and everything
in between thank you John thank you
Bianca for having me here hi how you
guys doing seating room is gonna be
gritty and it’s gonna be real how long
have you been doing this comedic thing I
started in May of 2006 and I’ve been
doing a pretty regular about once or
twice a week on average since then so
how did you know that this is what you
wanted to do well I’ve always sort of
been funny like I’ve always been never
good at sports or anything like that so
my big trick was to just make people
laugh and then I could avoid not
catching the ball with acting the
responses you have to wait until the you
leave and see the audience look at you
and know that was a good show that was a
bad show and even then you don’t ever
know but with like stand up you know
right away if they’re not laughing you
suck would you say that you you’re
pretty much completely vulnerable when
you’re on stage yeah but it’s a very
weird angry kind of vulnerable because
it’s not like it’s never sort of ends
with you get going home and crying it’s
like a very scary vulnerable it’s like
it like you’re gonna be put into an
asylum if you did that kind of
vulnerable anywhere else so where do you
usually draw your material from I mean
there’s nothing sacred that is that the
approach I would make fun of anything
like it’s like a person just committed
suicide during the interview I try and
get a bit out of that deep thank you
very deep I’m also trying to branch out
and knock knock jokes but that’s a hard
feel to get into because they pretty
much like knock knock who’s there banana
that’s like one of the great classic
jokes you can’t really improve
on that so do you have a notebook I
guess that you a huge notebook that
you’re constantly adding to yours it all
up here I’m always trying to write
things down and it’s literally the most
frustrating thing when you lose your
notebook and I leave lost like three
because you have like these little gems
of ideas like oh this joke but Kurt
Cobain and it’s perfect a lot of suicide
jokes are coming out I have a problem so
I of course I’m not going to assume that
this has ever happened to you but I’ve
heard that sometimes comedians don’t get
laughs and I imagine that that is it
sort of very scary thing to go through
what is your what’s your tactic there
comedy is ninety percent audience it’s
about ten percent comedian if the
audience is a good audience you could
get up there and just take your shirt
off and not even tell jokes and just
like walk around and they would die or
sometimes you’re going to get an
audience that doesn’t want to hear any
of your jokes they’ve just decided
they’ve come to hate something tonight
sometimes you just suck but most of the
time it’s their fault and any community
who doesn’t blame the audience I don’t
know how good a community in there
anyway do you have any last parting
words for maybe a gem a little piece of
advice and nuggets perhaps that you
could give anybody that’s always thought
oh I could do this I’m I’m funny maybe I
also don’t excel in sports what would
you like to say to those people ah if
you ever are thinking about doing comedy
a friend of mine dan Bingham I think
some do the best you just have to think
of it like this people you’re on the
roller coaster you’re strapped in and
just think we’re ready and let’s go and
no one will understand that unless
you’ve done comedy but once you get that
it’ll be so profound that you’re going
to want to buy me something
