this British indie rocker earned
recognition in France before he made a
splash around the world hi I’m Rebecca
Braden and welcome to watchmojo.com our
host militia he got the chance to chat
with charlie winston about how travel
affected his music and his career i know
you spent a little time in paris how
important and was the francophone
movement for your career coyote embraced
your life yeah it was very important I
mean it was a it was it was a huge
milestone in my in my career really just
over a year and a half I sell you know
over 600,000 records so it was it was a
big it was a big move and it and it gave
me open opened up my exposure to other
other places like Canada and Germany and
Switzerland Belgium Holland so it’s been
it’s been great and it’s been a nurse
allowed me to go on tour and do
headlining tours to 10,000 people so
it’s amazing
Oh
did you ever wonder why the French
embraced you like the way he did every
single journalist I’ve ever spoken to
has asked me to explain that and I still
can’t explain it you know it’s not I I
don’t know why there’s a million reasons
and I’ve sort of tapped on to all of
them at various different moments but I
think there’s just a spontaneity in who
I was who I am and I wasn’t chasing
success I wasn’t trying to be like the
next big thing or trying to be you know
have the next big hit I was just I got
fed up with with the whole music
industry and so I went traveling and
just thought if we were going to like my
music then I’ll find them but I’m not
gonna I’m not going to actually look for
them I’ll let them find me and I just
went and played shows all over Europe
and until stuff started to happen but as
always I was always very fixed on my own
journey being the most important thing
not not the not the destination Bob and
Alice travels that were whole ball came
from well hobo was kind of self created
by a by the song like I hope nothing’s
going to stop me I’m gonna I’m gonna be
like a train I’m going this direction if
you want to get on get on but i but i’m
not going to divert my direction and
then and then that led me gave me ideas
just start just go travelling
Oh
I took a big interest in modern-day
migration and what what it might be to
be that in that situation and a lot of
my previous album hobos was tackling
those subjects like in your hands was
about about refugees going to move about
and put their life into the hands of
others it was all about displacement you
know say which is a an ongoing problem
always you know and and so sorry my life
was created by that with all your
travels and journeys and experience that
you’ve had in different countries
different cities is there something that
marked you that touched you that
inspired you that may have changed your
outlook on life nothing’s really changed
my outlook I mean it’s always been
pretty much the same I mean if people
that change you most of the time you
know people experiences with people and
that’s that’s the thing that changes
someone but and how they how the world
relates to you especially as an artist
as soon as you have some success people
sort of projected their fears onto you
and they imagine how they would deal
with with success and always be worried
about me and that was nothing to worry
about you know I always knew it’s coming
so so it’s gonna be fine I know why
we’re all going to die on the inside as
man
