best known for its renditions of
Christmas classics the trans-siberian
Orchestra takes its rock opera style in
different directions to
I’m Layla for watchmojo.com behind the
scenes with founding member Bob kinkle
the title trans-siberian orchestra
reflects music the same way the
trans-siberian railway unites people
across distances and cultures and what
way does your music do that particularly
I think it’s music in general something
that transcends cultures and is enjoyed
by everybody no matter where you are
we have onstage 23 people with a full
rock band you have two keyboards two
guitars bass drums with each string
players eight singers a narrator so a
lot of people on stage so it has an
orchestral feel in some way but it’s a
full big fun rock show
the band is very large how would you say
you guys grow together
the band has like continued to expand
brought in more singers more players and
then as we grow it just becomes like a
bigger family and everybody works on the
CDs you know everybody gets to play on
them so it just gives us more talent to
draw from
how much room is that for
experimentation musically we kind of do
whatever comes in our heads
I mean sometimes some of our music is
based on maybe a classical piece or with
the Christmas stuff or traditional
Christmas Carol
said more than half of our music is
completely original and we never get
writing original music it comes from all
different sources sometimes you’ll be
just improvising and come up with a riff
and from that you’ll build a song
sometimes we wake up with a whole song
in your head sometimes like I’ve sat
down with Paul O’Neill the two of us put
writing and I just start playing he
starts singing something and we just
keep going and ten minutes later we have
a whole song
upfront the performance is very magical
how much of that magic stays with the
performers a lot of it actually the
crowds we have are phenomenal you’ll see
people in suits and ties next did you
know people in torn up t-shirts
everybody gets to experience one thing
together and they all have a great time
and that feeling comes up to us on the
stage
how demanding is it onstage as I said we
have some of the best players in the
world up there so I guess we make it
look too easy sometimes but we’re
playing really really hard stuff a lot
of notes really fast
congratulations thank you so much for
your time thank you my pleasure
