Interview With Bad Religion – Jay Bentley Part 2

hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today in part two of
our interview with Jay Bentley of Bad
Religion our host stephanie gets to find
out more about the present and future of
this legendary punk group
you guys have had so far 14 albums so
that’s a lot of material that you’ve
covered in what direction do you guys
want to take like the next step to
maintain some sort of relevant idea
about what we are as a band first and
foremost and not to try to keep changing
or become what’s popular now musically
you know we’re kind of at this apex
right now where everything’s good we’re
all happy Greg’s teaching at UCLA and
Brett’s running epitaph maybe we’ll make
another record maybe we won’t we don’t
really have that contractual obligation
we just make records when we want other
bands asked me what’s it like to be on
epitaph and I have to say I don’t really
have any idea the guitar player in our
band is the owner of the label you tell
me if I have an objective opinion of
what that labor was like I can’t you
need to go talk to other bands that like
have to like make phone calls and and
get through to people and ask them what
it’s like because I’m sure I get
priority treatment how is it like
collaborating together after all this
time are you guys best friends is it
harmonious to be honest with you we’ve
always been our own best producers when
we’ve hired other producers that seems
to be the times when we’ve had more in
fighting was he bring this fifth party
in and he’s kind of giving his opinion
and then we all start fighting for some
reason when we’re alone and we’re
talking to each other about how we feel
about certain ideas and songs and
structures and parts being played we’re
more able to take that criticism it’s
just kind of having a respect for
someone’s opinion you don’t necessarily
have to agree with it but you know being
childish and arguing and all that stuff
that’s that’s for 15 year olds so we
left that behind when we were 15
what do you guys do to sort of keep
touring fresh after doing this for so
long or even making music together in
the studio in a strange way one of the
things that that has really impacted the
last three records has been the addition
of Brooks lacrima the drummer I always
have this idea when I see people who are
musically talented unlike myself and I
go out you’re one of those guys that’s
really good well he’s so much better
than anyone I’ve ever seen that yeah I
have to struggle to keep up with him and
go like I’m so bad it’s not even funny
so that’s kind of kept everything fresh
because he plays things that are
unimaginable and it allows Brett and
Graig when they’re writing things they
can write a song structure based on
something that they think Brooks can do
which I’ve never heard anyone else be
able to do which is great
