his latest book concludes the trilogy of
contemporary sci-fi novels begun by
pattern recognition and spook country hi
my name is stephanie and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
to william gibson about zero history
what can you tell me about the
relationships between design clothing
and technology that are found in zero
history if we are a post-industrial
society and we’re often characterized as
as being that and we do seem to to farm
out the actual industrial manufacturer
of products wherever possible to
countries that haven’t quite arrived at
a full post-industrial status if that’s
what we really are what is it that we do
like how you know what do we do what are
we doing to pay pay the rent and it
seems to me that we we’re becoming an
information society and simultaneously a
service society I wanted to explore
explore that in a kind of naturalistic
way show how information works in in
different ways as a commodity head and
the product I could have done it with
wet military weapons I could have done
it with with civilian automobile design
but does both of those things were to
fit much more tightly into the
conventional and quite macho recipe for
a conventional spy thriller so I decided
that I would do it with various really
very super contemporary aspects of the
fashion industry
as as the background it may seem like
it’s just blue jeans but people people
can get killed I don’t know if people
actually do get killed over blue jeans
but a lot of there’s a lot of very
serious and sometimes quite ugly
industrial espionage taking place in in
the global fashion industry all the time
you use twitter in zero history and you
also use it in real life could you tell
me a bit about how this tool is used
both in the book and in your personal
life in the books to care of some of the
characters are using Twitter actually as
a kind of totally private Internet they
follow each other and they don’t follow
anybody awesome for some reason that was
the first thing I thought of when i
discovered twitter i thought wow you can
have your own private world in here and
you could communicate review could
communicate really easily lovely and no
one would know one would be able to to
see it that oddly other than my book
I’ve never heard of anyone doing that or
maybe the people maybe people do it and
keeping a secret well I discovered it I
immediately saw that if for me it was
the first really attractive piece of
branded social networking media on the
internet that I’ve seen I’ve never been
interested in in facebook or on myspace
at all because they felt two strata felt
to structuring Twitter’s simplicity
appear appeal to me thank you so much
for your time well thank you
