Interview: The Crystal Method

these guys helped pioneer electronic
music hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome
to watchmojo.com and today we’re
speaking with the Crystal Method
so how did you guys initially get
together and realize that you’re both
into electronic music we just started
separately kind of working on some kind
of electronic music we’ve worked at the
same place have part-time jobs with this
Smiths food and drug so we need to know
each other a time and then one day I
just saw this guy like walking into the
break room with a drum machine so yes we
became fast friends and we put all our
gear together I was like 88 or something
like that like wow yeah 20 years ago now
who have been the Crystal methods
influences like a lot of classic rock
you know a lot of 70s rock and soul and
and also some disco but then you know
Depeche Mode new order Public Enemy a
lot of classic rock sounds and then a
lot of dance music and then a lot of
electronic
he does like things that I’m not into
like what’s that song from that chicken
he’s that beautiful my guilty pleasure
sir and how would you say the scene
itself has changed since you guys
started like the beginning of our career
sort of was the heyday of the rave scene
the electron was coming into its own and
you know and that was great especially
for our first album but we kind of
always knew that it was kind of Evan
flow as far as electronic music in the
mainstream especially in the state
square dance music is sort of frowned
upon a little bit you know and it’s
great to get an infusion of new genres
of music you know the whole French
electro sound I think has really helped
out I think it’ll just continue to
change and develop and get better
now you guys collaborated quite a bit on
this new album which is I think
something that is a bit new why did you
guys decide to do this we just wanted to
follow every song to its natural
conclusion we didn’t want to cut any
corners there was a great effort to
reach out to people and send tracks to
people that we were into just like what
we did with the studio we we didn’t cut
any corners we’ve built a really
beautiful studio that that will allow us
to have a place to record for that you
know hopefully the rest of our career
and I think that knowing that we’ve
spent the time to do that we should
really spend the time to make the album
that we want to make and I think that
led to or if he was really talented
people in each song feels to both of us
that it went to where it needed to go
thank you very much guys all right thank
you thank you
