Inside WM: Who Can Replace Jon Stewart? – Ep. 7

hey mojo holics welcome to inside
watchmojo episode 7 welcome welcome ash
hello guys sorry so you will be off next
week mi that’s correct i’m gonna be in
warmer climates what a long winter this
has been I feel last year was colder for
like a few days but this year it’s just
been constantly painfully cold like all
of 2015 has been I mean in Fahrenheit
negative territory i guess or like
single digit territory and i think it’s
obvious it’s been like minus 20 every
day yeah it’s horrible horrible so
that’s fun yep ah but that’s all the
warmer climates so we’ll be meeting Mike
next yes Mike who you’ve probably seen
in a few of the videos as you know
Mitchell you’ll get to meet him yeah and
what’s he gonna be talking about well
Mike manages Mike there’s a lot of
things but Mike Mike basically manages
our team of freelance writers so a lot
of our a lot of you guys who submitted
an application to write for us of
probably dealt with them and I think
what what we’d love to do is go through
like the do’s and don’ts best practices
of writing for us because we do get a
lot of inquiries and the more streamline
things are the more we can produce right
so last week you mentioned something
about new office space yes so when we
moved into this is our third office in
the history of watchmojo we’ve been
around forever nine years so this is our
third office we’ve been here for maybe
two years when we moved here we were
eight nine full-time people this is like
about 2,500 square feet it’s not huge
but we like it but now we’re 20 people
in the office so you could imagine we’re
starting to feel like sardines once in a
while these people are not extras
although they’re good looking like
actors they are actually working or
basically pretending to work so we ended
up securing a couple thousand square
feet just underneath us which is perfect
and that’s where we’re going to be
shooting so in like a month or two when
we’re shooting this you won’t see these
good-looking people behind us this we
could fire them all basically not so so
we’re going to have the luxury now to do
other things we had discussed a video
game show we’re going to start tinkering
with that desktop all the notes we had
just gives us freedom to do a lot more
and if we want it to hire more than we
can also just you know have production
upstairs business downstairs etc so are
we getting the the fireman pole we could
because i think it’s literally
downstairs but i need to work out a bit
to make sure i could climb back up yes
going down will be easy it’s the company
thank you something else has happened
this week the awkward trailer how do
people react to that um well did you
read the comments no I don’t I stop stop
reading the comments no people liked it
i’m especially cuz i’m a terrible actor
so I’m like I’m not even comparable
trash like pretty good oh I thought you
were very good when you know when you’re
lying there about all you heard Matt’s
doing geo I thought you guys I can be
convincingly you can be very convincing
so no I mean I think some people thought
that we were gonna do a bunch of awkward
moments a lot more like you know but but
it was really just a kind of quirky
irreverent intro to set up a lot of top
ten lists on awkward strip shows kissing
scenes like basically still movie and TV
highlights a lot of people did a few
people were like oh this is like office
Canada yeah it is basically that was
kind of a joke we didn’t we didn’t we
weren’t beating around the bush there
some people said you’re trying to copy
BuzzFeed I don’t have time to watch
BuzzFeed but I would I’m guessing they
do something similar or maybe they just
do awkward lists in any case and some
people s should we do this more often I
mean it’s no mystery we used to do skits
and whatnot we may do more of these I
mean there’s a lot of awkward moments in
in the daily office you know day and dad
operation although it’s not that common
than people walk in on people in the
bathroom it does happen did this happen
but usually it’s planned and
non-cancerous it’s uh update on the
women’s brand that’s something we keep
picking around yeah so we we produce
content that for all intents and
purposes the ladies and gentlemen like
but our audience is about eighty ninety
percent men now we have like we generate
180 million views each month so even ten
twenty percent of that is a big number
generated by the gals most of our
content I think works for any gender
anywhere
any ethnicity and all that it’s kind of
global there’s a global appeal to it the
example I use though is like if you do
workout songs the 10 songs that a dude
is going to listen to might include
Megadeth and Eminem and sure there’s a
lot of female fans of eminem and
megadeth but there’s a good chance that
like not to be stereotypical that girls
are going to listen to five six seven
different songs right we’re cat like
what would be your top three favourite
world I can’t even tell you there’s this
is Elton John song that’s kind of poppy
and I like that one just cuz it’s a good
like speed but like Elton John I love
Elton John don’t get me wrong I would
never listen telethons oh no no I know
that I would not put that on no but my
point is you know you could if you were
to sample 100 ladies and said what’s
what are you listening to when you go to
the gym it’ll be very different than
what oh my god these fears song you said
it I don’t want to be sure I’m guessing
it’s a rihanna britney spears and nicki
minaj whatever you know me well maybe
not Nick you enjoy that far away but you
get the point like guys listen to
different things and same thing with
movies and songs and so there is a there
is a merit to at least exploring that
now we’ve been kicking around that idea
and on last season when we have
watchmojo faq we asked the Mojo holics
most of them said it ain’t broken you
don’t need to fix it but so i was in new
york last friday i caught it was so cold
and i was meeting a media company that
is basically you know a big well-known
media company that has women’s brands
and they were very impressed with what
we’ve done and they wanted to know if we
want to partner with them to do
watchmojo but another version for the
ladies and you know at the end of the
day it was very humbling to see that
they’re impressed with what our team has
executed on but I still think there’s so
much more we could do for our core demo
and there’s a way that we could still
please both the men and the woman in the
way that we do so i think we’re probably
going to still for the foreseeable
future stick to our guns but it’s just
interesting that the same great idea is
that you know we discuss our fans and
our selves other people also sort of
come to the same conclusion so this week
we had someone right in to ask us if
they could translate our clips and up
them to their own YouTube channel yeah
so this is a very common question we get
we really are humbled that we have such
great fans and it’s kind of great that
some of you guys want to take on that
undertaking we have started through the
YouTube platform to allow the module
holics who speak different languages to
add transcripts in other languages okay
we’re trying to do that in a streamlined
way not too chaotic the thing is first
of all to be realistic no media company
would be okay with people taking videos
and just putting them on their own site
but but there’s also a nuance and I do
want to just be direct to explain why as
a media company all media companies are
need to get certain insurances this is a
bit like inside baseball but I just want
to explain it because then we’ll link
back to this because we get this like
five times a week so we get certain
insurances because God forbid make a
mistake when talking about Brad Pitt for
example and saying in his biography that
used to be a member of the KKK KKK
they’re obviously not true now let’s say
we make an honest mistake we do that
Brad Pitt’s people sue us for defamation
we need to have certain insurances to
make sure we don’t it was an honest
mistake let’s say we get that those kind
of insurances because we don’t let just
anybody upload their content to our site
and we don’t let people randomly take
our videos and put them elsewhere so
imagine if a mojo holic who means well
takes one of our content one of our
videos and makes a mistake while
translating honest mistake but Angelina
Jolie goes from being the sweet gal that
she is saving people in Africa to a
warlord who is exploiting gold mines in
Africa oops oops one little word you
know emphasis on the wrong syllable
right everybody screwed watch one drives
a big problem on it 10 so I know it
sounds like Oh Mike this is when you run
a media company these are all the things
you have to worry about so for those
reasons now imagine if you hate watch
bones when you take one of our videos
and you say that Hitler was a great guy
and we’re like oh my god other bigger
problem our head so for that reason know
as much as we want our clips to be
entertained by people who don’t speak
English and we’re making that possible
through YouTube and our community
manager Kenneth who’s been on
last year he explained how and we’ll add
a link to how that could be done
unfortunately just for common sense
purposes and we do run a business here
we can’t really allow you guys to just
take our videos and randomly put them
into Earth right do you want to go over
the new my watchmojo mods yeah so you
can now update uh you can now follow
other users so let’s say if you want to
follow Rebecca when she’s producing what
are you working on we’ll talk about the
other day okay so let’s say you’re
working on a given topic and you want to
follow and help her make the list even
better you could follow her but you can
also follow fellow mojo holics if you
see that you know Joe and Denver comes
up with these great lists and you want
to follow to see what he’s suggesting
and compare notes you can but we also
now want you guys to add your top ten
it’s not a top ten list it’s really just
the ten things you’re into passionate
about or an expert in so like I said bad
example but like mine would be 80 s hard
rock sports trivia of all kind travel
history you know certain things that I’m
well versed or passionate about and then
I think what we’re going to experiment
with is let’s say one of you know one of
our mojo holics is a stamp expert if we
then wanted to do for later list I
believe is the word for that there is
yeah I was like is that a profile of a
human so let’s say we wanted to do top
10 you know most valuable stamps or top
10 most I don’t know hard to find stamps
I don’t know if we would then want to
use that tool to get the stamp experts
and connectors to chime in to make sure
our list is kickass because what we
don’t want to do is put out a list that
we think is well-researched and on the
ball and then the Palais des is it ever
comes out and bashes are saying you guys
suck some guy on Twitter was like
watchmojo again messes up a list gets it
wrong and I was like that’s because we
want to go into meteorology can get that
long as well I badly so while you guys
are playing around with the new features
you should vote on some suggest pages
that we need help with like these ones
another top 10 anime theme songs top 10
horror based anime and top 10 movies
with massive civilian casualties massive
civilian casualties that makes me think
of Man of Steel which I actually liked a
lot of one of our colleagues Derek
dislike that movie and the thing that’s
funny is I was like we’re having a
discussion i’m like why it’s it was like
for what it was I thought I was pretty
good SEC it makes no sense you know
they’re having a massive fight
destroying everything every building but
then in the end there’s like one family
that Superman basically decides to like
spare and not kill type of thing even
though they destroyed the whole city
battle that’s the one movie I think of
really when I ya think of that list will
it make it we don’t know you have to
tune in and watch the video so I’m
working on this week top 10 disney theme
park TV episodes and i don’t actually
know of any off the top my head although
i think the Muppets went to one of the
Disney theme parks so yeah I’m working
on a bunch of YouTube clip so this year
marks the 10-year anniversary of when
YouTube was launched so we’re gonna work
at least on 21 is just top 10 moments so
like the acquisition by Google whatever
some other events like that and then the
other one are just the top 10 youtube
videos of all time in terms of impact
how memorable they will were how
successful they were and how much they
shaped so it could be maybe the first
one that one of the cofounders uploaded
being at the zoo it could be you know
gangam style I don’t know I mean you
have to tune in but a vote on both of
those things to make sure that the lists
are bang on good one for last week’s
contests we had two two contests the
first was for Canadian fans only and we
had 10 sorry out it was my idea we asked
you guys to tell us what your robot
would do if you invented a robot and we
had 10 blu-ray combo packs of the now
Oscar winning big hero 6 to give away
now we can’t rant read all the the
tweets that we got but here are some
good ones matsya at insomnio vivo says a
cuarto or awkward oh the robot designed
to defuse awkward silence or moments in
any given situation with the best dance
moves Travis at truants at truant
Simpson my robot was simply used to feed
me snarky / sassy retorts and witty
one-liners to exit a room with and
finally Eric at Rick with the hair if I
had a robot I’d program the little guy
to pop up at random
points in the day and give me high fives
to the power of love song what happened
to death and destruction I mean I’m kind
of the supply they were good but come on
I like these ones but wait as I
mentioned we had two contests and the
other one was for our everybody so the
world in honor of the SNL 40th
anniversary we asked you guys to tweet
us your favorite Saturday Night Live
quote do you have a favorite sound hella
quote yeah it’s probably the most
memorable ones the ones you get I want
to ask you your favorite skits though
okay cuz I think more of skits for some
reason records okay well okay well I
picked the winner so this is gonna make
me look by sproul except celebrity
jeopardy classic shit ah I like Bobby
and Marty Culp which was on a gas tire
and Will Ferrell doing the cup of joe
yes cuz I just like music uh no huge
trouble oh I love that one I was okay um
I always loved the political debates
okay yeah those are good on celebrity
jeopardy I would list as well there’s
true that kind of way back I just want
to quickly one had Kirstie Alley she was
the guest rooms with yeah this is way
back with Kevin Nealon and they were on
a date they went to this restaurant
Eagle cantore and it was basically like
all the staff starting to you know try
to pick up Kirstie Alley very awk it was
very long time it was very long time ago
like late 80s no probably early 90s and
then the other one this one I can’t find
anywhere online no matter how much I try
to look for it it was dysfunctional
family feud no and that was the best ki
Chris Farley probably one of his
funniest ever if you could find that
somewhere on sites that shall remain
nameless um that’s one is just kidding
I’ve looked everywhere for that and I
have not found it Oh Chippendales in
Salzburg trip Adele’s good to you so a
lot of you guys seem to like the cowbell
sketch which is also a classic opera of
course but uh because of my bias we had
to give it to at Jesse coca-cola who
gave us this i’ll take the rapists for
500 Alex celebrity jeopardy and I just
wanted to do my fake Sean Connery
impression so that’s why he won anyway
to everyone who won both contests be
sure to email us at contest at
watchmojo.com to claim your prizes and
to send us your shipping information now
on to this week’s contest as you can
imagine we’re pretty uh sad to see Jon
Stewart leave the daily show later this
year but are you really was it still
that
are you I don’t watch it I mean I have
watch that I’ve seen it live I went to
see a taping of it but I I mean I think
he’s just important to that’s it be like
political discussions Jon Stewart if you
look at his run the first half was
probably more influential than most news
you know people and comedians I think
what happened is in the second half the
show kind of I mean had amazing moments
but the show kind of start to go off the
rails a bit i didn’t watch it that much
anymore and i think what he saw i could
be wrong like no one really knows what
he’s gonna do next and i think he could
do anything he’s brilliant very funny
very smart but I think he probably saw
that you know what Fallon’s come back
and he started to kind of like
reinvigorate tonight show Letterman’s on
his way out Kimmel’s still there doing
his thing there’s Conan O’Brien and all
that I just think he got a sense that
you didn’t want to stay when the show
would get too stale so I think most
people are just when they’re like oh my
god were so sad they’re probably talking
about the overall tenure he had I don’t
think the last few years of the show was
as good as was early on but we’d kicked
around the idea even when Letterman was
announced that he was leaving we kicked
around the idea of doing top ten
replacement hosts uh now why is it that
we decided what I mean the thing with
the Letterman was this by the time we
kind of like discussed internally who
would be on the list and kind of said
okay do we do it or not his replacement
was announced yeah so it would have been
a bit weird like top ten people who
could have been the host and then the
same thing here that video would have
such a short shelf life and you could
spend you know 100 hours researching and
prepping it and then you know News’s
like the news is announced that somebody
is going to take a slot so we kind of
shy away from that I think what we did
when the Letterman’s story was in the
news as we did just top 10 late night
host yeah well we actually did daytime
aunt Leigh nine but yeah daytime Ellen
who do you who do you think could
replace simmer should replace him Jon
Stewart uh yes Jon Stewart him so I mean
demint jon certain yes um I don’t know I
heard Tina Fey’s name knocked around but
then she wouldn’t be able to do other
things so I’d be like yeah I Tina Fey
makes actually a lot of sense uh you
know people said Chris Rock I don’t
think that would work I think Chris Rock
like Jon Stewart
was really good at blending humor with
politics the problem is i’m a huge Chris
Rock fan it wouldn’t work because I
think Chris Rock’s hardcore fans would
find John him doing the jon stewart
stick being a bit too defanged and to
mainstream and to PC Chris Rock doesn’t
come out and say like drop fball I mean
he does swear and say crazy stuff but
he’s more subtle but he’s actually quite
hard core and some of the stuff he says
and I just don’t think that like
mainstream America tuning in would go
for that so it would be kind of like a
fail for the viewers and it would be a
fail for what chris rock fans want which
they want more his edgy you know half
the stuff he says would sounds crazy and
when you’re kind of reading it in a news
article or listening to you know his his
stand-up kind of fits but I just don’t
see that working on on prime-time
frankly so where are we going with this
that’s the contest this week to him
there you go tweet us who you think
should replace Jon Stewart with the
hashtag WM question and the winner will
receive a prize see you next week
