to do a little getting-to-know-you
portion sooo how long have you been with
the company I joined up with WatchMojo
in 2009 so it’s my sixth year with the
company yeah alright and what is it that
you do here’s a good question I’ve worn
many hats with watch mojo from writing
to producing certain sections of the
content right now my job is a director
of the freelance writing team alrighty
so lightning round I’m putting you on

stuff mm-hmm I know you want to do some
do’s and don’ts for people who I do yeah
so I’m gonna read them off and then you
can kind of expand on what thinking
sounds good
so do apply if you want to be a regular
writer if you’re excited by pop culture
topics if you want to help us rank
topics and if you want to write about
topics that you pitch
as well yeah that’s super exciting about
WatchMojo that as a writer you get to
come in say what you’re interested in
writing about choose topics that you
want to write about you could even pitch
topics and will greenlight them if it
makes sense with our editorial calendar
like our editorial voice and and our
audience so you get to do what you want
to do as a writer which not many people
give you the opportunity to do to come
in and be like I want to just be a video
game writer great we have tons of
content you could write especially if
you’re a gamer mmm do you apply if you
want to pick what you write about and
work on a schedule that complements your
other drugs and/or school that’s it as a
freelancer you’re fully part of the team
we don’t we don’t think of our
freelancers as outsiders you’re part of
the DNA of the company you like we said
you have a voice and everything you want
to take this opportunity to thank your
team oh that’s right that’s what I
wanted to do I want to thank the writing
team you guys are amazing
we have excellent writers they really
have they put their enthusiasm and their
hearts and souls into everything they do
and we wouldn’t exist without you guys
right so anyway we wanted to talk about
working on the freelance schedule your
own schedule yes that’s right so if you
have a full-time job that’s great you
could still write with us if you have a
part-time job that works too if you’re a
dedicated freelancer we have some
writers who’ve made freelancing with us
a full-time job which is super cool that
they can do that and work from home and
write about what they want to write
about as a full-time like we don’t have
we don’t mandate that you have to submit
like twenty in one week so if your
schedule dictates you can only put in
like two scripts a week that’s cool
we’ll work with it if if there’s an
absence you could take your absence come
back it’s very no pressure the way we
run it which is cool do you apply if you
want to be a credited writer who’s
associated with the brand yeah that’s a
big one especially if you want to get
your name out there and if especially
have no credits to your name for example
because you don’t need to come in and
say hey ever in the ten book you could
come in you have no experience right
we’re gonna get to the foundation part
but you get in your name is in the
metadata which means when you google
your name it’s associated to that video
and your your name is gonna be on the
website underneath your video right so
you get all the credit you need yeah so
do
make sure that your resume is complete
super important if you can’t write a
coherent resume I assume you can’t write
a script fair enough
that is a good point don’t apply if
you’re not a capable writer with a
post-secondary fact yeah that’s it the
idea is that you have the foundation in
writing so I’m not going to teach you
how to write you come in knowing how to
write and then we will fine-tune the
format and you get to put your
creativity in and and take it from there
right what are we saying if you’re old
enough to vote you’re old enough to
write for us yes yes yes all righty
don’t send applications without resumes
that’s right we do get a lot of
applications where they just say hey I
want to write for you guys okay yeah
that’s cool but I kind of need to know
your background like I said you don’t
have to have worked like we have a lot
of people apply and they work in like
let’s say restaurants and whatnot that’s
fine I need it for my files I need to be
able to contact your need information
and like I said if you can’t write a
resume it’s a bad song yeah but you know
what’s even more important or as
important at least the cover letters so
important particularly because the cover
letter is really where your personality
and where your interests come comes
through so that’s where we really kind
of get an idea of your writer that’s it
because I’ve hired a lot of the writing
team and just looking through the
applications if I see just like here’s
my resume it’s like okay I don’t know
how you found us I don’t know why you
found us you know what I mean you’re
like I want to be a writer and then
here’s my resume it’s good to have that
cover letter so I know your interests I
know what you like about our like our
site our brand what we do and that way
if I’m if you’re interested I’m
interested and then I’ll contact you and
it will we’ll take it from there
but we don’t need your transcript
transcript that’s I know no I I mean
it’s cool if you got like you know I get
a thing of grades and I read the prints
I don’t I what is this 92 and math you
know 63 and Jim you should work out more
failed economic people I don’t judge
people but I mean it’s it’s great but
for being a writer I don’t need your
transcript fair enough even though I’m
proud of you great in your honor oh
that’s that’s great don’t apply if you
don’t
have the time or patience to adjust your
to your new role at WatchMojo yeah
that’s a super-important one we have
Raiders come on and I mean obviously
with any job you take it slow so you’re
gonna work on one project till you know
you get the hang of it then you could do
multiple projects and work on your your
dozen projects on the flip side we have
writers they’ll come in we’ll go through
all the training they’ll go through all
the materials they’ll write one project
good job and then where are they they’re
not answering my emails for three months
and then they come back they’re like oh
I want to take on another project I mean
you got to keep you got to keep your you
know feet in the pool so to speak so you
should try to be regular as a writer
right fair enough
and finally don’t think that you need to
relocate to write for us if you write
out of your own home however if you live
in Montreal what do the nice people win
well you’ve won the opportunity to come
in sit with the team help us ranked
matrices be part of our meetings have a
coffee with Rebecca and me so that’s
pretty big maybe Dan – Matthew that’s
important yeah yes oh that’s very cool
to have to help us rank in the meetings
oh yeah I get you already have your
voice heard having worked on the
research but now you get to be there and
shout at us at the meeting and be like

it gets so heated bruises on my shirt
you know and I know you wanted to
mention that we never delete
applications no no I don’t to be honest
I don’t need the extra megabytes in my
gmail so I keep the the applications and
in that folder it’s a special folder I
won’t delete that folder and if you
don’t hear from me it means we haven’t
had a need yet or you should send in
that cover letter yeah so you could
follow up if you’re like oh I sent
application I’m not happy you could send
a follow-up don’t suit the next day and
don’t be like sending me 100 follow-ups
but if you don’t hear from me in a few
