a guard dog is meant to alert its owner
to the presence of an intruder hi I’m
Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
with Joe Rosen about guard dog training
in terms of a guard dog are there
specific breeds that are better suited
to it well that’s for sure I mean your
standard German Shepherds Dobermans
Rottweilers giant schnauzers those are
the best I might be skipping a few but
definitely they make better guard dogs
then some other breeds like an Irish
setter or a husky would you say anyone
could use a guard dog or are there
specific scenarios where it may be more
useful there’s a difference between a
guard dog and a personal protector a
guard dog is more for a place of
business behind the fence like a car
lock where nobody’s giving a command
somebody’s walking by the fans may be
trying to jump the fence the dog will
react
whereas personal protection is for the
city it’s also a companion it’s a pet
that will react upon command or
provocation and not just out of the blue
how would you say a guard dog is more
effective than an alarm people usually
bypass alarms every business that’s ever
been raw by law had to have an alarm so
they climbed the walls they cut the wire
and they’re in a dog and I guess they’d
have to shoot a dog will bark will show
teeth alarm is not a weapon a dog can be
a weapon how is a guard dog trained
first there has to be a lot of control a
lot of obedience placed on that dog out
that’s scent stand down Oh
you don’t want to order a pizza and the
dog goes for the pizza guy because he
thought he’s an intruder it’s got to be
with a lot of testing a lot of
situations we create those situations
where there’s the bad guy the owner
giving the dog the command to react we
will not back a guard dog down we want
to give the dog that confidence based on
the dog’s reactions using his his
survival instincts to back away the
person agitating he gets his reward of a
lot of praise and attention and love can
any dog be trained as guard dog no a lot
of them have to have that that’s
survival that’s tough instinct that
won’t be back down that isn’t afraid and
isn’t overly friendly either
