How to Collect Vinyl Records

hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re learning
more about vinyl collecting you’re not
going to kill little record stores like
mine because we’re there to continue the
flame if you want so we tell people
about music we like that’s what we like
people come in here to discover stuff
we’re like the curators of a museum you
know saying like why would you want a
print of a Picasso when you go into a
museum and see the real deal
same thing with records you can go
through 60,000 titles on a net before
you find one whereas I can tell you well
this is a great record a lot of our
regular customers that’s what they count
on like us telling them what’s good past
and present
because there is new bands that are
coming out that are just as good that
they don’t know about because our radio
stations are so good at not playing
anything but the lowest common
denominator we’ve heard stairway to
heaven enough ok please give us a break
you know myself and my employees have
different areas of expertise or things
we like
so if customers know that I’m a soul guy
or they’re going to ask for some
recommendations in Soul a lot of them
what they do is I’ll recommend something
and they’ll buy it they’ll go on the
internet and listen to it and he’ll come
back and say I heard on it I heard some
of the songs on it it’s great then they
buy it what do you need to consider when
buying a record in terms of condition
and rarity and that kind of thing
it’s always supply and demand condition
conditions very important I price
according to my experience I have been
doing this for 24 years now there’s
records that I price high because I
never see them I know if I sell certain
records that I have in the store and it
takes me 10 years to sell them doesn’t
matter because in the entire 10 years
that that records been there I have not
seen another copy cheap records are what
you’re supposed to discover ok and if
you really love something then you say
well ok now I’m making more money you
get a bit older than yourself now I’m
going to improve the quality of the one
I have but it’s ok to start with two and
three dollar records and four dollar
records I have to stress the thing that
most people don’t do that they used to
do when I was younger
they don’t take enough chances by
anything is because the covers look good
because they look interesting that’s how
you discover things there’s nothing more
it’s really you discovering something
and then telling your friends
that’s the best part explain to us the
difference between collecting as a hobby
and collecting as a business everybody
ends up doing what I do started off by
collecting as a hobby and because they
like the music this became a job for me
because I ran out of time being a
musician so I was like okay I’m hitting
my 40s and do I want to still struggle
in peanut butter sandwiches or do I want
to do something get a real job and to me
a real job was working in a record store
so most guys that own record stores
either musicians DJ’s they were all
record collectors to begin with the way
for them to get their records as cheap
as possible is to go to grass she’ll buy
the whole box and keep the ones they
like and sell to rest
