How to Collect Stamps

stamp collecting has been around almost
since the first stamp ever was issued if
not before
because there were stamp lists covers
before there were stamps and because
stamps really relate to what was going
on in that country at any particular
time people found it important to hold
on to these things this is one of the
most popular hobbies in the world hi I’m
Rebecca Brayton and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’ll be
learning more about stamp collecting I
was given a stamp album when I was 8
years old
I thought it was really fascinating and
I took it from there did as much
research as I could as a kid found it
very enjoyable tracking down stamps and
completing sets and topical stamps that
you know as a kid you might like dogs
cats birds and it became a little
business for me by the time I was a
young teenager would you be able to show
us some rare stamps and maybe some
materials yeah of course let’s go what
I’m showing you here are some examples
of what a an advanced Canadian collector
might be looking for the first item here
is the first vamp that Canada issued
it’s called Canada number one it’s a
three penny beaver it was issued on laid
paper which distinguishes it from the
similar staff which was issued two years
later its value is roughly $3,000 in
today’s market the next item is an
example of Canada’s second rarer stamp
it’s the Canada 12 pence Victoria it’s
also on late paper the value of the
Canada number 3 is between 50 and 250
thousand dollars depending on the
condition the next one is the second
stamp that Canada ever issued but it’s
in mint condition which actually makes
it rarer than Scott number 3 because
there’s less than 10 of these in
existence and probably less than 5 that
have their original gamma on them like
this one does near $100,000 in today’s
market the next item is quite unusual
it’s a $2 Queen Victoria with the center
inverted let’s say revenue staff that’s
how you used to pay for let’s say the
tax on your pack of cigarettes there
used to be a label attached to
and the final item is the famous
Lawrence inverted Seaway it also has the
center inverted this is Canada’s most
popular error or as we call it in the
trade variety what happened is the
center of the stamp was printed upside
down it immediately became a very
popular thing to own and became very
expensive right from the get-go this
stamp sells for between ten and fifteen
thousand dollars on the market today now
I’ll talk to you a bit about things that
you definitely need if you’re going to
be a stamp collector first of all
there’s the famous pair of tweezers or
tongs as some people might call it most
people like these longer ones because
they’re easier to handle a lot of people
have turned to what we call hingeless
albums if you’re going to be collecting
a particular country you will also need
a magnifying glass the little details in
a stamp can make a huge difference a lot
of people like to put their stamps in
these little black cards they’re called
I don’t know why we never thought of
specific names for these things so there
you go black cards they come with
one-line pockets or to line pockets and
then put them in a little plastic sleeve
then you’re on your way
you
