HipMojo 14C: MC Hammer, Search, YouTube Revenue

welcome back to segment three lightning
round an email of the week alright so
let’s jump in MC Hammer is launching his
own search engine apparently he can fix
google as though there’s something wrong
ash you have a good history in search
what do you think thumbs up thumbs down
i started my career in search and it’s
really hard google is the ultimate
monopoly it’s really impossible now Don
dodge former altavista guy former
Microsoft guy current google evangelist
wrote an article a few years ago that
one percent market share is equal to 1
billion dollars in market cap
technically that does make sense if you
just cross multiplying all that the
reality is search is not broken it’s not
perfect but it ain’t broke in four
ninety-nine percent of the world but
it’s true though that if you launch
something a la power set where there’s
some interesting technology some
interesting thing someone like Microsoft
could come and buy you is wire do MC
Hammer’s project that I don’t think so
the idea is relationship deep keyword
relationships I believe that thermos you
know what the PR is useless it
ultimately boils down to are the results
good and then does it take off remember
cool yeah whatever former Googlers
themselves launched a search engine
became a media darling in the tech
blogosphere over again yeah before it
even launched and then nothing yeah so I
think it doesn’t matter it’s really
about are the results good that make you
go hmm and then does it take off the
thing with google is a lot of it came
through distribution deals where they
also bundled adsense and adwords so they
had the monetization and the great
technology so even if Y or do do do crap
do crap store whatever comes around and
it’s a good search engine it might not
really take off because publishers with
the audience and the eyeballs who are
doing the search queries are going to
say well why are we going to replace
Google on our site which is also
generating revenue for us that’s the
challenge it’s not just we built a
search product madam Oh Joe we don’t
spend one percent of one percent on it
anymore because right away google and
yahoo copied the features you could
search for meta mojo to find out what it
was all about the point is it
the matter even if it kicked ass and
some of the social customization
features were ahead of its time we were
never going to be able to monetize the
audience they already have the user ship
and it takes them weeks to close yeah
the features and functions next up why
do most social media departments fail
alright so tomorrow Weinberg wrote this
great article on this this week and it’s
like 1,500 2,000 words is a super
monster article it’s an ashcan like
article pretty much but it was she made
a lot of good points and it mostly comes
down to setting SMART goals and she’s
using that that’s smart acronym and it’s
specifically goals that are specific
measurable attainable realistic and
timely pretty much why most social media
departments fail is that people just
decide that their company should be
doing social media and they don’t
understand why whether they hire the
best consultants in the world that
consultant has isn’t as intimately
familiar with their like high-level
business goals as they are or if they
try to build a team and train them
internally there just isn’t that
commitment to it because they don’t know
what they’re doing they want to be on
Facebook they want to be on Twitter but
they don’t know what they want to get
out of Facebook and Twitter aside from
more money ok just a fall question and
then we’ll move to the next question I’m
not saying a social media of fat it’s
obviously not to the average Joe it’s
important you know I read a report that
some people will forego more salary to
be able to work in an environment where
they could access facebook on Twitter
which actually makes a lot of sense
because it talks about their culture but
do you think that for marketers and big
companies is social media a fad like in
a few years are they going to care less
about Twitter and Facebook and maybe
have that presence but then worry about
I don’t think social media is a fad they
may or may not care more or less about
you know Twitter and or Facebook in the
future but just depending on what kind
of other social tools become available I
think something that we have to keep in
mind is for the early adopters the
companies that jumped into social media
early and we’re smart about it like
right then and there just might be by
virtue of being early adopters they go
to huge head start anyone who comes in
late is gonna have to work ten times as
hard even if they have their goals laid
out even if they have a plan and they
know what they’re doing because they’re
walking into a community where everyone
already knows each other and they’re the
new guy and they have to build up so
much trust otherwise they just look like
douchebags salesman so I don’t think
social media is going to go away I think
it’s going
more challenging if anything and it’s
going to get taken a lot more seriously
but it’s probably in the grand scheme of
things going to get folded into greater
marketing or PR initiatives or
departments ok cool next question all
right so um so interesting someone from
barclays capital o guy named Anthony
DiClemente he had he threw out some some
numbers and it pretty much comes down to
this do you think YouTube is actually
worth one point six billion not worth
you is it worth I think he said that
they’re generating one holding enjoy
traveling in revenue so yeah I mean you
look at this way highly possible I’ll
tell I’m always wary of talking about
YouTube Google since we’re partners with
them and I always talk generalities but
never know how people are going to read
what I say um here’s the bottom line
Google YouTube generates three billion
video streams per day now so let’s take
the average between the beginning of the
urine now let’s just assume it’s 2.5
billion per day 2.5 billion impressions
per day at a cost per thousand so that’s
you know let’s say 2.5 million
impressions to be monetized assume half
of that is being monetized and I would
say even the crap still gets monetized
through one way or another even if they
get a two dollar CPM between the itunes
link and the ad and the pre-roll when it
runs and all that they’re doing about
probably a billion a year easy that’s
just off the pages right add now the
massive four hundred thousand dollars
that they charge or rumor has it that
they charge for the main page per day
which is probably more now do the math
YouTube is printing money I’ve always
said it’s a good deal Mark Cuban who’s a
gazillion times more wealthy than I says
it’s a worse deal more power to him you
know I think it’s the best you’ll ever
YouTube is definitely doing well over a
billion I think in in top line which is
why they took a hundred million dollars
from Google’s balance sheet as an
investment to content because they’re
basically taking money from their
balance sheet and putting it over to
their income statement so yeah it’s
probably possible that i think 1.6 might
be a bit aggressive but it’s not
actually outrageous now what is crazy is
that
all of online video this year was
supposed to do two billion so if YouTube
does 1.6 I’d say nine percent that’s
which I think that’s wrong what I see
happening is YouTube probably end up
doing one to 1.5 billion and I do think
there’s upside in total online video to
do two to 2.5 which is still small the
bigger issue is that YouTube is sucking
out all the value you know we live in a
world where YouTube basically tells
advertisers you don’t even have to pay
for ads just pay it if somebody watches
it and at that point will charge a
premium but everyone else is dying for
impressions I get emails marketers
saying could we please run ads will pay
this will pay that and I’m like they
must be really starved for impressions
and the reason is everything’s on
YouTube YouTube has eighty percent reach
in terms of us viewers and 43 at
forty-seven percent market share in
terms of views and the irony is sixty
percent and I could say this now because
it came out sixty percent of YouTube
views are non English audiences we’ve
always seen that when we look at our
stats we see what comes from US canada
UK Australia India and it’s the minority
most of YouTube is already a global
brand so possible last question for
email of the week google launched this
gmail app for the iphone and apparently
it sucked like big time I didn’t even
have a chance to download it because by
the time I got out of meetings and I
want to download it I was I’d already
been poked it had been pulled could they
ever come back from this or are they
like Microsoft where they just bungle
things and well usually Ballmer start
sweating and they don’t have a Steve
Ballmer which is which is probably
fortunate for them Google Steve
Ballmer’s cool in his own way I think
well in the same way you know overweight
orangatang czar anyways um Google butt
fumbles things all the time they they
launch things that don’t take off and
somehow they keep making money and they
still kind of enjoy a lot of bread and
sympathy or recognition or whatever I
think they can come back from this it
was one iphone app you know what I
download apps all the time or even
update apps and the update is worse than
the previous version in a few days
there’s a new update and things just fix
themselves I think the only reason this
made the news is because it’s google and
it was the gmail app for the iphone you
know right now even people who are using
gmail
host all their email are if they have an
iphone they’re probably using the the
native iphone app it’s embarrassing I
think they’re smart enough to make sure
it doesn’t happen again it might slow
down I guess adoption of the app but I
think long run if they can make a
kick-ass app they should be fine listen
just one comment before we move to email
of the week I’m really unlike mr.
balance you know like if someone says
someone’s cool i’ll say no they’re not
these are the reasons and vice versa you
could say all you want about Microsoft
but even Steve Ballmer but the company
makes more money now than it did before
you know gates left stock is in the
toilet but that’s bigger broader issues
but speaking of just specifically you
mentioned I think the reason why google
launched the gmail app or rushed into it
is because apparently hotmail is adding
a hundred thousand users each day
because of the iphone app that they have
which is interesting you know because
we’re talking about hotmail world’s
number one I weather yeah and and so
they’re apparently doing pretty well all
right in all the week email the week
comes from a lady named Jenny and she’s
asking ash what do you think of the
higher slow fire fast mantra yeah we’re
living in a time now where it’s like
fail fast start a company and if within
two months there’s no traction shooted
move on to the next one which has some
merit but I think again we’re talking
about overnight successes not being
legit it’s crazy talk and and we live in
this world where they’re like hire
people slow and fire people fast I mean
as the guy who like let’s say the CEO
also in charge of HR at the company
sometimes you hire someone and you do a
bad job of casting them you know what I
mean and I think they’re good you just
have to open your eyes and take a second
to see what maybe they’re good at
something else to see it all the time
people like brought in or the perfect
person for the job they’re poorly
trained yeah all right Zach oh they’re
poorly trained and and it’s you know
especially in the startup environment
you don’t have any HR department so it’s
like you sort of have to okay so I think
we live in this time or you know it’s
like you see VCS they’re like oh you
know Michael Arrington on uncrushed
world something about how one of the VCS
who invested in him they’re like super
cutthroat and they’re like no nonsense
and they just tell you the truth you
know that’s called being rude you know
it’s like people what happened to
diplomacy what happens attacked so we
just live in a world where I’ve always
said it i love VCS nothing wrong with
pcs where VCS are basically training
entrepreneurs straight into the gutter
to become these sort of like you know
higher I mean higher slow fire fast I
think the idea is yeah sure take your
time when you’re higher make sure you
get the right person but if something’s
not working out unless you hired a
donkey there’s a good chance you should
look in the mirror there’s a good chance
you probably didn’t do something right
so I’m not saying it’s it’s I disagree
with it per se I just think that we’re
in a culture where we’re really setting
up wrong objectives for human beings in
their 20s and 30s and we’re growing up
to become these very you know non-social
douchebags because everybody wants to
build a billion-dollar company and flip
it to the bigger sucker within six
months and that’s gonna you know that’s
why the u.s. is where it is etcetera
etcetera it’s not sustainable it’s not
sustainable that’s been this week’s show
