all right well welcome back to the third
installment of episode 12 we’re about to
hit lightning round so last week we were
talking about streaming media’s list of
top 100 video companies online you noted
that there was only one content company
on there and you made it choke well
maybe it wasn’t a joke that you’re going
to build out on top 100 content creator
list you started doing that yeah and I’m
at 74 and this is not just like ash cans
list I actually reached out to a number
of people in the industry whom I respect
who are well versed and who sort of
cover or work in different spheres of
online video and i’m actually at 74 i’m
looking for the last 26 what I might go
was so you’re looking for 26 more you’re
hoping well who should be submitting to
the list and what other process for
getting my chosen how do I became number
one as I get more than video blog okay
so here’s the thing when I since this is
lightning round and not mild drizzle on
a warm afternoon we’re not going to
chime in all that all I will say is if
you’re watching this and you have an
opinion on online video content just
email me your thoughts at Ashwood
watchmojo.com and then i will send you
the criteria there’s a post i will send
you you could share it within your
community and your circle because what I
did was I went in with a lot of
admittedly we all do I went in with a
lot of biases and oh I think it will
cover this subcategory and not that sub
category and frankly on multiple levels
I’ve changed my mind and made it more
inclusive more unique it’s actually
shaping up to be quite good so I
definitely want to get as many people
early on involved and I’m guessing it’s
going to be completed pretty soon and
there’s a little bit of a twist which
will you know divulge when we divulge
the list so just email me at Ashford
watchmojo.com and I’ll take you through
all the details all right question to
what do you think of Microsoft’s
marketing all right um disclaimer I I
used to do work for Microsoft I used to
work on some of their social media
campaigns here in Canada anyways I think
they think they have a couple problems I
think they have trouble with the chicken
or the egg question for example they
give away give a free black keys
sir at their store in what Seattle
Seattle yeah to get people to line up
like um lines don’t lead to sales it’s
because there’s a demand for your
products that a line is created and then
you know they kind of have this reverse
causality problem but then if you also
look at a lot of their branding
campaigns over the last few years they
seem to be completely screwed up even
the I’m a PC campaign right there you
launch this huge branding campaign that
was framed by your main competitor
you’re pretty much saying oh we’re
trying to be that cool and you you spent
advertising dollars on it I think what
happens in the case of Microsoft a lot
at least on the on the branding and add
side is that you have an agency that
works with them you have a bunch of
mediocre admin I’m not saying they’re
incompetent I’m just saying you know
they’re not add geniuses and they have a
budget that’s bigger than they know what
to do with so they try to get creative
and then they go to Microsoft which is
probably really hungry to just do
something hip and cool and they’ll sign
off on anything that’s cute and cheeky
but just because something’s cute and
chic he doesn’t mean it’s going to move
products and doesn’t mean it’s a good
way to represent your products okay well
puts nothing to add on that all right so
comscore released some new numbers this
way yes they right now they say that
YouTube has forty percent of the US
market share forty seven forty seven
percent that’s right what do you think
do you think YouTube is gaining or
losing ground well obviously it’s
gaining it was at forty three percent
for your ground but market share yeah
it’s gaining market share and it will
continue to gain market share because
unfortunately it’s a self-fulfilling
prophecy the company with the biggest
set of eyeballs is going to just ensure
that other content creators are like
well why do I need to be on the YouTube
clone three through eight I just need my
content on YouTube and the users are
just going to keep going towards YouTube
because that’s where all the content is
however that’s really half the equation
that what is really good I think help
youtube take off in years to come is
actually the shift towards over-the-top
connected devices Google TV I don’t even
really know what Google TV is right now
that’s why they’re making the big rush
towards maybe buying Hulu or doing some
kind of deal and expanding once they
really start to push all of that content
into the living room and
for that matter matter then I think
YouTube will even have more upside and
the last third dimension as to why
YouTube will grow is take us we used to
upload flash flv files which were fairly
compressed low quality compared to
higher resolution files we are now even
just doing that we’re shooting in HD so
there’s this evolution in terms of even
the quality of the videos that are
increasing at a torrid pace and I think
for all those reasons over time YouTube
is going to be this massive massive
force in the marketplace fourth question
the ipod turns 10 this week do you think
that the ipod from a marketing
perspective not so much product but from
a marketing perspective especially
considering that then the iphone and the
ipad came although you could compare
them to those is the ipod the most
successful product every when you think
about it how it totally changed the
industry changed the broader tech
industry change Apple etc etc I think it
was huge for the same reasons that the
Walkman was huge you know back in the
80s and the 90s it was it was a big
thing everyone had a Walkman or wanted a
Walkman it kind of there were other
portable cassette players and CD players
but the Walkman was was the staple so in
that sense yes I think the ipod was huge
both for and one of the most successful
products because of what it did for
music portability also for how it was a
springboard for you know the iPhone and
the iPad it got them into developing
this mobile hardware and technology I
would be worried though that Apple won’t
be able to follow through to the next
generation of cool hip portable gadget
just like Sony had the Walkman
innovators dilemma yeah they had the
Walkman but they they never really did
anything when it got to mp3 players and
now I hate the flag of deadhorse no pun
intended by the way but now that Steve
Jobs is gone I’d be very concerned that
Apple can’t continue to keep following
that that innovation through okay
interesting email the week email the
week comes from Jeanette from New York
City she says ash Netflix has lost fifty
percent of its value in less than three
months do you think Wall Street likes to
punish companies that plan long-term
look at what happened to Amazon Amazon
is taking a hit on the Kindle even
though it looks like the Kindle will
become like the fastest most you know
craziest selling device of all time
and they got their stock took a hit yeah
I think Wall Street cares about
short-term profits look at what’s
happening with Occupy Wall Street why is
that happening because people are like
realizing that Wall Street analysts and
all that only care about short-term
Henry Blodgett one of my idols he came
out this great article that said America
should be very thankful for what Amazon
is doing which is basically hiring a lot
of people investing in the future
investing in technology that’s going to
you know shape America in the next
decade to come Netflix is a bit more
unique Netflix is unique in the sense
that their strategy makes a lot of sense
but Netflix is whole history has been
loved by analysts hated by analyst loved
by analysts hated by the analysts now I
said 34 weeks ago on this very show that
netflix has no business being a 12
billion dollar company I said I’m not
telling you to sell or buy it but you
could have read between the lines and
said oh my god he’s sort of saying why
is Netflix worth 12 to 13 billion which
I think was too high I’m not telling you
to go out and buy Netflix right now I’m
really not but I think probably the
selling was a bit overdone whether or
not it’s going to go back to where it
was I don’t think so I don’t think
Netflix was it in 2011 or 2012 it made
sense for them to be worth 12 13 billion
but there it would make sense for them
to be worth a bit more than 3 billion
and yes Wall Street always looks at
short-term unfortunately it’s in
hindsight the mere fact that analysts
come out the day after Netflix goes down
by forty percent and they say sell the
stock what what the hell shouldn’t you
be telling me this yesterday you know
what I mean so I think Wall Street and
the analysts themselves are being
disrupted it’s less important what they
think I think sometimes companies do
things for reasons that are unclear but
long-term they prevail and I think
Amazon prevailed will prevail netflix I
think will probably turn around whether
or not it’s going to reach the previous
highs i think is a bit harder which was
the famous economist that kind of argued
that in the long run we’re all dead
pee-wee Herman no I’m kidding who’s not
P waivers good we’re going to take a
break again for one week we’ll be back
same time same place next week
