Great Big Sea Discusses Safe Upon the Shore

their music is traditional maritime rock
but they’re always trying to bring
something new into the mix hi I’m
Rebecca Braden and welcome to
watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking
with great big sea about their album
safe upon the shore
difficult a blessing and a curse but I
live in life without one is something
far worse I think you guys tried to
bring something new to the new album
kind of a southern influence he tells
more about that we’d recorded the last
four albums in st. John’s and we felt if
we went to do that again we would be in
risk of repeating ourselves particularly
the kind of songs we had which were sort
of harking back to a more kind of
classic great big sea sound we’re all
about making it interesting crossin for
everybody else we’ll go somewhere
different somewhere we’re outside our
comfort zone I don’t know anybody we
don’t have a feel for and we decided to
go to New Orleans in Louisiana this was
we like to say we would love that when
we’ve been there and you know just go
into a studio there and hire local
people to come play with us and see what
happens and I mean half it sucked you
know it didn’t work but another handsome
it was really interesting is the way
they approached off and the ideas they
brought really brought out a solder
music that we didn’t hear everybody knew
the closest to your heart do you guys
ever find it difficult to keep bringing
new sounds to the kind of old tradition
no in fact the problem actually is the
other way around i mean we’re full of
new ideas and we all play lots of
different instruments and everybody
seems so it’s not like we’re any danger
making the same record over and over
again the problem is more how much new
stuff do we bring in without screwing up
to think that’s really good you know
remember
the thing is as an older band becomes
harder and harder to convince people
that your new music as good as your old
music the challenge for us is to keep
making a relevant
and how is the album translated life
very seamlessly I mean one of the things
we really thought about this time unlike
the last couple of Records is like the
only songs are putting on this record
sounds we’re going to play we’re going
to learn how to play everything there’s
not going to be like two good ones and
then forget the rest of it you know so
every night we made a concerted effort
to bring this stuff in and it’s been
amazing to watch people react to it you
know you’re always a little tentative
about new songs and you know man we just
poured our hearts into that and don’t
care is you know and this song has been
the opposite people really embrace a new
material and such a good radio station
we’re hearing something new with
something old makes both of them sound
different you know we have ten albums
and we could play all those ons and we
have four lead singers and everyone
plays multiple instruments so the sound
changes every night the set changes
every night the concert changes every
night so he became three times would be
almost completely different
