album some nights so I wanted to talk to
you a bit about how your music has
changed since your debut album aim and
ignite the three of us just with this
band or any bands that we’ve ever been
in have always put great stocking and
moving on never making the same album
twice you know there’s always there’s
always a part of us that kind of harkens
back to music from the 70s and what we
loved growing up kind of hearing about
from our parents and then always wanting
to push things forward and for some
nights with this album we wanted to go
further in the future direction and
hearing like the production that Jeff
Bhasker was doing with Kanye and Alicia
Keys just seemed to us like we could
marry that with sort of who we are as as
people who love you know music from the
70s that would be really cool
combination and that was the theory
behind that which wasn’t in a nightie
night was just much more about kind of
self producing and piling everything on
throwing the kitchen sink at it
can you tell me a bit about the musical
and their lyrical themes on some mates
well the mainly real things are just the
concept of being a different person on
any given night which ties into the
concept of kind of figure out who you
are and I think that there’s a lot of
themes in there that also get pretty
specific just about family and parents
and kind of like not always the stuff
that you hear in pop song is a little
real not in the sense of like people
talking about like drugs or hell but
people talking about sort of mundane
aspects of life and how tough they can
actually be basically everything was
just about pushing further you know
making every sound exciting never
settling for anything you know if
there’s gonna be a guitar come in or a
violin like there has to be a big grand
reason why it’s there not just to do it
because I think in the past we’ve been a
little guilty of kind of piling things
on for the sake of it
some nights spawned a really huge hit we
are young
why do you think this song has resonated
with so many people I mean it’s like an
alternative song and think you were
ready for that and it’s been like a good
10 years since a song like that of that
style of music has been big and I think
people are much smarter not saying that
people are smart for liking us but I
think that people are smarter in the
sense that they want a more diverse
palette of music on the radio and it’s
very easy to keep delivering the same
kind of form the flow of pop songs but
when a song you know just like Dodi a
song or our song this year it just sort
of shows that you know people people
want a greater variety and you know that
you can can’t really ever get away from
like big guitars and big drums gonna
exist in some sense
and how did you come to collaborate with
the Janelle Monae on the Sun just in
like a major fan moment we knew we
wanted the female vocalist she was at
the top of our list
Jeff ran into her at a Bruno Mars
concert like backstage later the song
she recorded that in Germany wouldn’t
even meet her until four months after we
did it like a lot of stuff like that is
like labels being like we should put
these artists together because one plus
one Malik will do for us it was just we
love her and just be so nice to
collaborate with someone that has
actually inspired us it’s a rare thing
we sort of saw that as like a strange
depressing song about like relationships
falling apart and kind of at the end of
the night sort of finding a way to have
a good time even though like there’s a
lot of crap going on and then to see
like the audience reinterpret that is
like this big anthem of like you know
feeling young and hopeful it’s it really
shows us what an audience can do to your
music it makes us want to push further
in that direction I think the thing I
love the most is that when both parties
are working together they can create
something that’s bigger that each of
them like this like third power
so the next single is the title track
some nights can you tell me a bit about
that song that’s exciting for us because
to us we can’t believe it’s a single
like that it it was chosen by the fans
like that song just started selling for
some reason and southern everyone you
know between our camp and our label was
just like well this is obviously what
people like well we’ll go with it
we are young make sense to me why why it
can connect a lot of people the fact
that some nights is now out and doing
well is really the coolest thing because
it’s sort of like the centerpiece of our
band are just like within the parameters
of what we are some nights it’s like
lyrically musically just exactly what we
were going for it to have that be a
mission statement coming out we were
