chewing is a common complaint among
those caring for dogs hi I’m Veronica
watchmojo.com and today we’re going to
look into a solution to this popular
problem so why do dogs feel they need to
chew on everything first of all they
don’t have opposing thumbs so when they
want to explore something it’s gonna be
with their mouths think I put it in
their mouth I guess you know different
textures and try it out of second when
they’re puppies four to eight months
they’re losing their puppy teeth
basically they will chew to soothe the
pain discomfort that arises from that
third chewing expense energy so I mean
any pup is high energy but if they’re
left to their own devices if they’re
bored that’s gonna be a natural reaction
let’s go grab something chew on it yeah
it’s fun i’m using up my energy it’s
great how do you deal with each of these
stages as with anything else it does
require a bit of chaining a bit of you
know teaching them what’s what can be
chewed and what can’t one of the first
things that you should do when you get a
puppy or any dog for that matter is
create a safe haven for them it could be
a crate where they have their own crate
or it can just be you know a special
corner in the house which has been puppy
proof their dog proved which is their
place when you can’t keep close eye on
them that’s when they go to their safe
haven towards for their place when you
can keep an eye on them you let them
explore but you coach them along the way
how do you provide your dog with
feedback that you’re happy you’re upset
with them so if they like the to the
legs off your table you know as they’re
going to the table you know start to see
what they’re doing the second they start
going there tell them no redirect them
to a chew toy when they go to that shoot
i reward them you know give them a pet
tell them they’re a good dog you know
even give them a little treat at the
beginning so that the associate well
when i chew on this thing this is okay
and i get lots of phrase and i get
cookies and this is great when i shoot
on the table leg I get no and I have to
stop right away and it’s bad and they’ll
start to understand that distinction and
start to know what they can’t you want
and what they can you know it’s finding
the appropriate toys giving them
something a way for them to do
that energy and effectively thank you
very much you’re welcome
