after their bassist cheat Chang was
seriously injured in a car accident in
2008 this alternative heavy-metal band
put the album they were working on on
hold hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome
to watchmojo.com and today our host
Ricky got the chance to speak with
Deftones about that album arrows and the
first album without chief diamond dies
so you guys want to maybe talk a little
bit about the albumen with you guys
tried on that one I think that general
idea was trying to get a record out as
fast as possible we were very limited
with our time and our money we were
almost finished making another record
with G before his accident so we had
this idea of making kinetic record as
crazy as it sounded when we were able to
do that and we saw that it was happening
it was happening really fast it was a
lot of fun to see us get down to it and
actually you know whoa we can do this we
haven’t done it like this forever we
were a band we can we had everything
drilled dial we you know we really just
got down to it you know we made it with
a new person and yes to Nick Nick and
Sergio being a new person to be right up
with so there’s a lot of us a lot of
fresh energy too but also an urgency
like a need to like you said I mean we
had very limited funds we had already
used nearly our entire budget to make
arrows which you know so at this point
we were really up against a gun to but
it never felt like it
we were just stuck it was a breeze man
so that was a perfect example of us
taking another chance in ourselves where
after cheese accident we could have
pretty much just said alrighty see you
later dude yeah I’m gonna be a but we
didn’t you know I’m saying and we kept
on and cuz we wanted to be like I like
hanging out with him I like making music
with you and we like playing and then
that’s taking a chance on ourselves and
I think we made the best record we’ve we
have to this day possible
what’s the writing process like as a
band is it a collaborative or more of an
individual take very collaborative you
know I mean I think it’s it’s kind of
chaotic at times but I think we’re
getting better at it
at pinpointing but school stuff and
someone can be like well that’s a really
good keep going with that abs and one
layer on top of it and especially on
this last autumn cycle that’s there was
a lot of that just happening really fast
enough each person trying to add their
thing and make it happen really quick
and and to be really proud of leaving
the studio that day with almost a
finished long
sometimes weevil we’ve gone into the
studio I tried to write half a record in
the studio and then we’ve made good
records that way him good songs but it’s
not always the best way to do it doesn’t
mean you have to be that to be in the
studio to be creative you know there’s
just different ways of doing there’s
really no formula but this last time I
think us everyone after she’s accident
and everyone realizing how lucky we are
to be doing it still et cetera it made
for this very special moment for us to
just kind of get down a new focus
going back to eros what’s the status on
that album you know it was nearly done
it was uh we actually were starting to
mix songs Eno had a few more things to
finish vocally we were actually like I
said mixing tracks while he was
finishing up and the artwork was was
getting completed so all these things
happen in everything just came to a
grinding halt you know of course we
would love to see it come out of some
point I think it was you know we’re
waiting pretty much for Chi you know
hopefully he would be able to be there
with us it’ll definitely come out when
the time is right right now we sort of
just it’s just they’re simmering
your live show has been getting great
reviews lately what do you think the
fans love so much about it and what do
you guys bring to your audience we’re
just having fun I think it translates I
think that transfer of energy between us
and then it’s happening people are
seeing a band that’s having fun again
you know and such as laughs you get
those ups and downs we’ve been in the
touring you know machine relentlessly
for quite some time and you know if you
found out that nice but I did we’ve been
religious having a really good time man
lately and so you people are coming in
and seeing a band that’s you know on
fire again and it feels great good luck
to you guys have a great show tonight
and thanks so much for your time
